Thursday, a 12 story Surfside condo came crashing down to earth after the building had been sinking since the 1990’s.
According to USA today, the Champlain Towers South condominium was constructed in 1981 and has been sinking at a rate of roughly 2 millimetres per year since 90s.
The building was determined unstable one year ago, but apparently that didn’t stop it from being used. Fox reported that so far one death is confirmed and 99 people remain unaccounted for.
The official cause of the event has yet to be determined, though many speculate the “unusual” to be a factor. Speculation however may not be the best idea at this time.
“This is an extraordinarily unusual event, and it is dangerous and counterproductive to speculate on its cause,” Daniel Dietch who served as Surfsides Mayor until 2020.
As search parties sifted through the rubble at least 35 people were rescued. The death toll however, is unfortunately expected to rise.
