The Biden administration has announced that a “Disinformation Governance Board” is being established to combat “disinformation”.
On Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified that the board had recently been created and will be led by Undersecretary for Policy Rob Silvers co-chair with principal deputy general counsel Jennifer Gaskill.
The news comes days after Tesla CEO Elon Musk purchased Twitter.
“The goal is to bring the resources of (DHS) together to address this threat,” Mayorkas said. He also explained that the department is focused on the spread of disinformation in minority communities.
Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley is a major critic of the board, referred to it as a “disgrace” and writing a letter to Mayorkas demanding answers as to how it will operate.
“The Administration that activated the FBI against parents at school board meetings now has created a government Disinformation Board to monitor all Americans’ speech,” Hawley said.
“It’s a disgrace. Joe Biden & Secretary Mayorkas: dissolve this monstrosity immediately,” he added.
Florida Republican Congressional Candidate Dr. Willie J. Montague tweeted “Is there anything more dystopian than a Disinformation Governance Board run by the federal government?”
“They didn’t need a ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ until @elonmusk threatened their control over the narrative,” said Texas Republican Congressman Troy Nehls.
Politico reported that Nina Jankowicz, who previously served as a disinformation fellow at the Wilson Center, will serve as the board’s executive director.
Jankowicz was heavily criticized in 2020 for calling Hunter Biden’s laptop a “Russian influence op”.
She commented on her 2020 tweet, saying “For those who believe this tweet is a key to all my views, it is simply a direct quote from both candidates during the final presidential debate. If you look at my timeline, you will see I was livetweeting that evening”.
