A video was released by police from earlier this month when an officer in a Chicago suburb fired multiple shots at a man who allegedly charged at him with a hatchet during a traffic stop.
A Naperville, Illinois police officer was conducting a traffic stop at 11 a.m. on June 3 with a driver pulled over on the road.
The suspect’s car suddenly pulled up in the middle of the road, as can be seen in the body camera video released by the Naperville Police Department.
As the suspect started to get out of his car, the officer asked “Who are you, dude?”
Once he got out of the car, the suspect ran straight for the officer with a hatchet in his hand.
The officer fired his weapon several times after the man charged at him.
“I’ve just been attacked, shots fired, shots fired!” the officer said on his radio.
“Oh, my G**! Holy s***!” he said as he tried to catch his breath. “Stay in your car, man! Don’t move!” he shouted to the individual who was stopped.
The suspect, identified as Edward C. Samaan, 28, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said that “any loss of life is tragic” and their “thoughts” were with the suspect’s family.
Arres noted that the incident shows “just how dangerous the job of a police officer is”.
It is unclear why the suspect tried to attack the officer and an investigation will be conducted.
