Monday afternoon, a school shooting occurred in Knoxville Tennessee at Austin-East Magnet High school.
Details are scarce. There were at least one fatality and an officer wounded by gunshot. The police department has said in a statement that the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooter was allegedly killed and a second suspect was captured and detained by police. As of now the department has not identified anyone involved in the tragic shooting.
NBC reported “Earlier, Knox County Schools Superintendent Bob Thomas said the school had been secured and students who weren’t involved in the shooting were released to their families. Thomas called the incident “tragic.”
The ATF responded to and secured the scene. Those present during the shooting are now safe.
Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon visited the wounded officer in the hospital where she said that the incident ‘breaks her heart’.
She also thanked the courageous police officer for his bravery in protecting citizens located inside the school at the time.
