Jacob Chansley, widely recognized as the “QAnon Shaman” for his role in the Capitol unrest on January 6, 2021, was granted early release from federal prison and moved to a halfway house on Wednesday.

The Bureau of Prisons announced that Chansley had been relocated to “community confinement.” Although this term can encompass both home confinement and halfway houses, Chansley’s lawyer, Albert Watkins, verified that his client was placed in a halfway house. They also stated “for safety and security reasons”  they would not release any details about locations or transfer release plans for Chansley.

“After spending eleven months in solitary confinement before receiving his sentence and serving just 16 months of it, it’s fitting that this gentle and intelligent young man be allowed to progress to the next phase of what will surely be a law-abiding and fulfilling life,” stated Watkins in a press release.

Chansley, who drew widespread attention for his face paint and horned headdress during the riot, pleaded guilty to obstruction and received a 41-month prison sentence in November 2021.

The bureau now indicates Chansley’s release date as May 25 of the current year. While the bureau refrained from commenting on the details of Chansley’s case, it is possible for inmates to reduce their sentences through good behavior while incarcerated.

Chansley recently re-emerged in the public eye when House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) granted Fox News host Tucker Carlson exclusive access to approximately 44,000 hours of Capitol security footage from January 6. Utilizing the footage, Carlson contended that the riot was “mostly peaceful chaos” and presented clips of Chansley roaming the Capitol without interference, as a group of officers trailed him.

Nonetheless, additional evidence not presented by Carlson reveals that Chansley entered the Capitol unauthorized, was asked multiple times to vacate the premises, and was not constantly accompanied by police officers.

For example, a statement signed by Chansley and his lawyer contradicts the notion that he was continuously ‘escorted’ by police during the unrest.

The statement details Chansley’s encounters with law enforcement during the incursion, but also highlights that he “entered the Senate Gallery by himself.”

Although a statement was made and documents were signed, the video only showed Chansley acting peacefully and never did he do anything aggressive or out of hand.

Watkins has previously mentioned that his ex-client renounces the ‘QAnon’ conspiracy theory and would rather be identified solely as “the Shaman.”
