A World War in exchange for an optical diplomatic trip to Taiwan? This is the trade-off Nancy Pelosi is weighing ahead of a possible trip to the island in August.
China has threatened America with ‘severe consequences if the speaker is to travel to Taiwan. Pelosi has not yet canceled the trip and it’s unclear if she will.
The Daily Caller reported The Pentagon will escalate troop movements and security measures in the Pacific if Pelosi follows through with her planned Taiwan visit. China likely would not attack Pelosi’s plane directly, officials familiar with the matter told the AP, but senior officials worry that her presence could inflame existing tensions between the U.S. and China over Taiwan.
“If there’s a decision made that Speaker Pelosi or anyone else is going to travel and they asked for military support, we will do what is necessary to ensure a safe conduct of their visit,” General Mark Milley said.
The American government has had a rather lax attitude towards the prospect of a Third World War. Federal officials have on several occasions acknowledged the serious possibility of a war breaking out due to U.S. intervention in Ukraine. Despite this, the United States has not stood back.
Joe Biden has on numerous occasions warned that a war between Russia and America would be a world war. This did not stop him from promising more than $50 billion in aid to Ukraine, sending howitzer tanks and other weapons along with sending his wife to the war-torn nation.
Nancy Pelosi, Jill Biden, Lloyd Austin, and several other officials have traveled to Ukraine since the war began but what might have happened if one of them was to perish? Undoubtedly a war would begin. So why send them? Why send the First Lady of all people?
Optics and virtue signaling.
