Greene’s announcement comes after former President Donald Trump’s Florida Mar-a-Lago residence was raided by the FBI on Monday.

Garland said he “personally approved” the decision to seek a search warrant.

“The Justice Department has filed a motion in the southern district of Florida to unseal a search warrant and property receipt relating to a court approved search that the FBI conducted earlier this week. That search was a premises located in Florida belonging to the former president,” he said in a statement.

“First, I personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter,” he explained. “Second, the department does not take such a decision lightly.”

Greene’s resolution claims Garland’s “personal approval to seek a search warrant for the raid on the home of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, constitutes a blatant attempt to persecute a political opponent.”

It also says his “effort to unseal the search warrant for the home of former President Donald J. Trump constitutes an attempt to intimidate, harass, and potentially disqualify a political challenger to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.”

Republican lawmakers have thrown criticism at the Department of Justice and the FBI in response to the raid. Greene has even called to “defund the FBI.”

Before entering the Capitol to file the impeachment resolution, Greene told reporters that “What they’ve been doing to [former] President Trump is political persecution.”

“Merrick Garland has abused his position of power as the attorney general to politically persecute [President] Joe Biden’s enemies. And the whole purpose of this is to prevent [former] President Trump from ever being able to hold office,” she added.

The articles of impeachment are unlikely to pass in Congress because of the Democrat majority.
