During the 94th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, the co-hosts took jabs at Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill and Sen. Mitch McConnell.
As she took the stage, comedian Amy Schumer said “This year, the Academy hired three women to host — because it’s cheaper than hiring one man”.
“This year we saw a frightening display of how toxic masculinity turns into cruelty towards women and children,” said co-host Regina Hall. “Damn that Mitch McConnell,” Wanda Sykes added.
“But you know I was actually talking about ‘The Power of the Dog,'” Hall replied.
The three hosts then took aim at Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill, which has been nicknamed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
The bill, which passed earlier this month, stops Florida educators from teaching sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.
“We’re going to have a great night tonight,” said Sykes. “And for you people in Florida, we’re going to have a gay night”.
Schumer, Sykes, and Hall then repeated the word “gay” while dancing and laughing on stage. They were met with cheers and applause from the audience.
