Russia Accuses U.S. Behind Supposed Drone Attempt on Putin

LISTEN HERE:

On Thursday, Russia made shocking allegations that the United States played a role in a supposed drone attack on the Kremlin, an attack that Russia says was an attempt by Ukraine to assassinate President Vladimir Putin. This dramatic accusation comes just a day after Moscow reported that it had prevented a drone strike on a building that serves as both the center of the Russian government and Putin’s residence. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed that the United States was the mastermind behind the event. Unsurprisingly, the U.S. sharply denied the allegations, as did Ukraine.

According to Peskov, the decisions regarding the supposed terrorist attack were made in Washington, not Kyiv. ‘Kyiv only does what it is told to do,’ he stated in a daily briefing with reporters. The Kremlin spokesman summarily dismissed the attempts by the United States and Ukraine to deny any connection to the drone attack, calling their rebuttals ‘absolutely ridiculous.’ He also mentioned that a Russian investigation into the incident is ongoing.

In response to the accusations, Peskov warned that Russia would be taking ‘thoughtful, balanced, and appropriate steps in the interests of our country,’ although he did not provide any specifics. On Friday, a security council meeting chaired by President Putin is scheduled to take place to discuss the matter.

U.S. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby was quick to express his disdain for Peskov’s allegations in an interview on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe.’ ‘I can assure you there was no involvement by the United States. Whatever it was didn’t involve us,’ Kirby stated. ‘We had nothing to do with this, so Peskov is just lying there, pure and simple.’ He also made it clear that the U.S. did not ‘encourage or enable’ Ukraine to attack Russia.

On Wednesday, three American officials, who spoke with NBC News, confirmed that the U.S. had no prior knowledge of any such attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also denied his country’s involvement in the alleged attack, stating at a news conference in Finland: ‘We are not attacking Putin or Moscow.’

Zelenskyy emphasized that his nation is engaged in fighting to protect its own villages and cities but added that they lack sufficient weapons. ‘We do not have enough weapons even for this. That is why we do not use them elsewhere. We have a deficit. We cannot use everything and everywhere,’ he explained.

When asked about President Putin’s reaction to the alleged attack, Peskov claimed that the Russian leader remained ‘calm, collected, and clear in the assessments and commands that he gives out in extreme situations.’ Peskov also confirmed that Putin was at the Kremlin on Thursday and that staff were working as usual.

It is important to note that, earlier, Peskov remarked that Putin was not in the building at the time of the supposed attack. Analysts have questioned whether this was a genuine assassination attempt, with many dismissing the idea altogether. However, hardliners are demanding a response, and some are even advocating for a retaliatory strike against Zelenskyy.

The incident occurred just before Russia’s celebration of the then-Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, an important public holiday in Russia. This occasion offers a high-profile opportunity for Putin to rally Russians behind the ongoing war. Peskov confirmed that air defenses would be tightened in preparation for the event, which will include a military parade in Red Square and a speech from Putin.

Russia has frequently accused the United States of making crucial decisions on behalf of Ukraine throughout the war. Putin, his officials, and the state-run media have consistently claimed that Russia is at war with NATO, citing NATO’s expansion into central and Eastern Europe as a key pretext for Russia’s invasion.

The United States has provided Ukraine with over $77 billion in military and humanitarian aid. However, it has made efforts to ensure that its weapons are not used in attacks on Russian soil. On Wednesday, Washington announced an additional $2.6 billion in funding, which includes $500 million in military equipment, such as artillery, tank ammunition, mortars, rockets, and fuel tankers.

This announcement comes ahead of an anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive during which Kyiv’s military is expected to attempt to reclaim land seized by Russian forces. Recently, a series of incidents featuring explosions at sites within both countries has sparked concerns of escalation as the two sides seemingly prepare for an intensified conflict.

The Russian claims of an assassination attempt on President Putin and the alleged involvement of the United States are sure to heighten tensions between the countries. With both sides accusing each other of aggression, it remains to be seen how this situation will evolve.

While the accusations have yet to be substantiated, they do reveal the complicated dynamics playing out in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. As the conflict continues, the intensity of such allegations only adds more fuel to the fire.

As with any international conflict, misinformation and propaganda play a significant role in shaping public perception. The true extent of the United States’ involvement in the alleged attack, as well as the authenticity of the assassination attempt, are difficult to discern amidst a whirlwind of competing narratives. However, one thing is certain: the complex relationship between Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S. continues to evolve during these troubled times.
