A former employee of Planned Parenthood, 36-year-old Tim Yergeau, took his own life last week, according to police reports. His death occurred just five days after authorities mistakenly raided his neighbor’s home during a child pornography investigation.

Yergeau had served as the strategic communications director for Planned Parenthood’s Southern New England branch before becoming the communications director at Long Wharf Theatre in August 2022.

Although the police have not explicitly identified Yergeau as the suspect in the child pornography case, local media has confirmed that he was the intended target of the unsuccessful police raid on April 6. New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson stated that the individual who passed away was indeed the suspect in the investigation and the person who committed suicide.

A misdirected raid by the New Haven Police Special Victims Unit took place five days before Yergeau’s suicide. Instead of entering Yergeau’s residence, officers mistakenly broke down the door of his upstairs neighbor, Stacey Wezenter, handcuffing her and questioning her about Yergeau’s location. Upon noticing toys belonging to her young son, the police realized their error.

Jacobson acknowledged the mistake and expressed sympathy for Wezenter, promising to take necessary steps to rectify the situation. Details of the warrant and charges against Yergeau have not been released, as two investigations related to the case are still ongoing. The police have also withheld information about what they discovered in Yergeau’s apartment after searching it, and have opened an inquiry into the circumstances of his suicide following the raid.

Wezenter has filed a complaint with the New Haven Police Department, claiming she was traumatized by the erroneous raid and unwarranted handcuffing. She expressed concern about potential tragic outcomes, wondering what might have happened if she or her child had been armed during the incident.
