A leftwing group is is launching a campaign to pressure President Joe Biden not to run again in 2024.
The organization, RootsAction, has an email list of approximately 1.2 million people in the United States, according to Politico.
While it did support Biden in 2020, the group now claims he is too “moderate” on important issues, according to the new website, DontRunJoe.org.
A letter on the website about the campaign reads “In 2024 the United States will face the dual imperatives of preventing a Republican takeover of the White House and advancing a truly progressive agenda”.
“The stakes could not be higher. The threat of a neofascist GOP has become all too obvious. Bold and inspiring leadership from the Oval Office will be essential,” it continues.
RootsAction plans to spend at least $100,000 on the campaign, with digital ads starting after the midterm elections, Politico reported.
Some Democrats have said they would support Biden if he seeks reelection, but most seem to want someone else to be the party’s nominee in 2024.
“Unfortunately, President Biden has been neither bold nor inspiring,” RootsAction said. “And his prospects for winning re-election appear to be bleak. With so much at stake, making him the Democratic Party’s standard bearer in 2024 would be a tragic mistake”.
“Biden appears to be dithering while progressive achievements just go out the window, from abortion rights to the Clean Air Act,” the group’s co-founder Jeff Cohen said.
According to the latest FiveThirtyEight polling average, Biden is now below 39% approval.
