Last year, DC statehood made it through the Democrat dominated House of Representatives but was denied by republicans in the Senate.
Now that Democrats have a hold on both the United States legislative, and executive branches they can pass essentially any partisan bill that they can get their party to agree on.
Fox News Reported:
“D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has been leading the statehood charge in congress predicted earlier this year, “there’s never been a time when statehood for the District was more likely.”
The first step will take place Monday, when the House Committee on Oversight and Reform will hold a hearing on Norton’s 51st state legislation, aptly titled HR 51, the Washington DC Admission Act.”
Of course there’s never been a more likely time. It’s a partisan piece of legislation and Republicans have no power to oppose it. Democrats are acting fast so they can capture more congressional seats, and leverage their power as much as possible.
Even though the senate is blue, in order to move forward with statehood, at least 10 Republicans are needed. This is not going to be easy.
While this is a clear power grab by democrats it also does benefit the people of DC. the district has over 700,000 people, more than Wyoming but no representation in congress as of right now, making this a cause favorable to those who live in DC.
