Conservatives Question Double Standard as Trump Faces Indictment but not Hunter Biden

FBI Under Scrutiny for Hiding Bribery Evidence Involving President Biden and Son

LISTEN HERE:

Following the news of former President Donald Trump’s indictment by the US Department of Justice, his supporters have responded with deflection. Many are questioning why Trump is being charged while President Joe Biden’s son Hunter has yet to face charges.

This perceived double standard is disappointing to many conservatives, including Rep. Steve Daines of Montana who has already endorsed Trump’s 2024 campaign. As the person in charge of coordinating Republicans’ strategy for keeping control of the House of Representatives, Daines is concerned with this latest development.

This week, Republicans have been particularly frustrated with a standoff on Capitol Hill over a document detailing an interview conducted years ago. The interview was based on a tip given to the Department of Justice by former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, who had previously been tasked with finding dirt on the Bidens.

House Republicans believe that the interview with a confidential informant implicates both the President and his son, and they are urging action. However, there is some circular logic here.

Republicans are claiming that the FBI under the Biden administration attempted to cover up an investigation that started during the Trump administration based on Giuliani’s allegations – allegations that even Trump’s attorney general, William Barr, treated with great care.

So what exactly is it that Republicans allege? Essentially, they are saying that the FBI has been hiding evidence of a bribery allegation that may involve the President and his son receiving $5 million from someone with ties to Ukraine.

Republicans claim that the evidence comes from an internal law enforcement document, called an FD-1023, which details an interview conducted with a confidential informant. However, it is important to note that the FBI has not been able to verify this tip. This is the one and only allegation that suggests President Biden has been involved in anything illegal, and it is based on shaky evidence.

The basis for this allegation comes from a suspended FBI agent who has come forward as a whistleblower. In May, this individual told lawmakers on Capitol Hill about the form that details the interview and stated that the FBI tried to bury it.

Meanwhile, the FBI itself considers the information on the FD-1023 to be unverified. Essentially, anything could lead to an FD-1023 form, which does nothing more than acknowledge an interview took place. This is not to say that the FBI should ignore all information they receive, but they need to be able to verify it.

So will lawmakers finally get to see the document? After House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer threatened to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress, the FBI agreed to let all lawmakers on the committee view the FD-1023 form.

However, it’s worth noting that the ranking Democrat, Rep. Jamie Raskin, has dismissed this whole affair as part of an effort to smear President Biden and help Mr. Trump’s reelection campaign.

Once lawmakers were given access to the document, it confirmed Republican allegations concerning Hunter Biden’s business dealings with Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company, and detailed conversations over a few years about the allegations and payments made.

Republicans believe that the alleged payments to the Bidens are intentionally difficult to trace. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina has stated that if the information in the document is true, then there should be bank records to back it up. Republicans currently have an ongoing investigation into the finances of Hunter Biden and other Biden relatives.

In fact, the FBI has had this document for years, since the Trump administration. CNN’s Evan Perez explains that the document has origins in a tranche of documents provided to the Justice Department by Giuliani in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election.

So what has the FBI been doing with the information they obtained from the confidential informant? Under Trump’s presidency, his Attorney General, William Barr, directed then-Pittsburgh US Attorney Scott Brady to oversee the FBI investigation. Barr was worried that the unsubstantiated claim could taint the work being done by the US attorney in Delaware, who was overseeing a long-term and ongoing investigation of Hunter Biden on numerous fronts.

There are many ongoing investigations into Hunter Biden’s business dealings with foreign clients and his failure to pay taxes on time, in addition to his purchase of a gun when he was addicted to drugs.

In April, Hunter Biden’s attorneys met with officials in the Justice Department’s tax division in Washington, DC to discuss the allegations. There is a possibility that Hunter Biden could face charges for these alleged crimes, which have been a top target for Republican investigations for years.

Conservatives are right to question the perceived double standards of justice under the Biden administration. However, it’s important to note that some are questioning whether this whole ordeal is an attempt to distract from the fact that Trump is facing indictment.

Also, it’s crucial to keep in mind that comparisons between Hunter Biden’s alleged dealings and Trump’s mishandling of classified information are not entirely valid, as the evidence for the former is still shaky.

The FBI’s own assessment of the situation is that the information on the FD-1023 is unverified. It’s not necessarily that the FBI is trying to protect Biden, but rather that they need to verify information before they act on it. It’s the same issue that Republicans had with the Russia investigation – allegations about Trump that could not be verified.

However, if there is any truth to the allegations against Hunter Biden, it is important that lawmakers follow up on them.

Republicans’ frustration with this whole ordeal is understandable, particularly since the allegations relate to Biden’s son. Hunter Biden’s business dealings with foreign clients and his purchase of a gun while addicted to drugs are concerning issues, and they raise important questions about Biden’s judgment.

Regardless of one’s political allegiance, there is no denying that the US political system would benefit from greater transparency and accountability.

It’s important to remember that these are still just allegations, and it’s too soon to draw any definitive conclusions about Hunter Biden’s alleged involvement in illegal activities.

While Republicans may see this as an opening to smear President Biden and help Trump’s re-election campaign, we must remain focused on facts, not conspiracy theories. Until more evidence is uncovered, we simply do not know what, if anything, Hunter Biden is guilty of.

Republicans and Democrats alike can agree that transparency and accountability are crucial to maintaining a healthy political system.

While the partisan nature of politics can create a difficult environment for achieving these goals, it is important to stay focused on what is best for the country. Both sides should be open to investigating allegations of wrongdoing, so long as they remain grounded in facts.

In the end, the best course of action is to wait and see what the investigations into Hunter Biden turn up. It is not productive to jump to conclusions or engage in baseless finger-pointing.

Though it might be tempting to get caught up in partisan politics, we must remember that we are all Americans. Our political and social capital would be better spent working together to solve complex problems, rather than lashing out at one another over unsubstantiated claims.

It is understandable that conservatives are frustrated with the current state of affairs. Many feel that the DOJ is not doing enough to investigate Hunter Biden and that there is a double standard in play. However, it’s important to remember that allegations are just that – allegations.

Until there is conclusive evidence that Hunter Biden has done something wrong, we should avoid making assumptions. It’s important that we remain vigilant in our pursuit of justice, while also remembering to be fair and objective. Ultimately, this is what will help us move forward as a society.
