Despite the prevailing uncertainty towards the trial process, there’s a collective agreement among Americans—encompassing a massive 73% —that the accusations against Trump should not eliminate his qualifications for the Oval Office. In a test of loyalty, the poll demonstrated that 76% of registered voters who once endorsed the ex-President would continue to support Trump irrespective of the ongoing courtroom drama, or even if he was found guilty of a crime. In alignment with the findings from the CNN/SSRS poll, a separate study conducted by AP/NORC likewise brought forth similar conclusions. As the legal proceedings kicked off in Manhattan, majority of the people maintained skepticism about Trump having committed illegal acts concerning the case.
An interesting yet smaller portion of the surveyed population was ‘extremely’ or ‘very confident’ that the New York prosecution is treating the ex-commander-in-chief fairly. This group only made up 31%, leaving a majority unsure or untrusting of the fairness within the monumental trial process.
Simultaneously, the trial itself is progressing into its second week, following the completion of jury selection and initial opening statements. Outside of the core case allegations, Judge Juan Merchan is contemplating the prospect of citing Trump for contempt based on 14 claimed violations of a communication suppression order.
In terms of respondents’ sourcing, the CNN/SSRS jointly conducted poll involved a diverse cross-section of 1,212 American adults from across the United States. The survey took place within a six-day window stretching between the 18th and 23rd of April.
