The Minnesota Vikings are hosting free agent running back Kareem Hunt today. Reports suggest that Hunt has also met with the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. Hunt spent his fourth season with the Cleveland Browns as a backup to Nick Chubb.
He had a decent performance, rushing for 468 yards and three touchdowns on 123 carries. Additionally, he contributed 210 receiving yards and scored a touchdown through the air.
Recently, the Vikings released Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook, creating a void in their backfield. With Alexander Mattison expected to be the primary starter, the team is exploring options to ease his workload. However, Mattison suffered an injury earlier this month, which could make the situation more challenging.
In their preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks, the Vikings relied on Ty Chandler, who impressed as the lead back. Chandler’s competition, Kene Nwangwu, was unavailable due to injury.
Although Chandler showcased his skills, he has limited regular-season experience with only three appearances. Additionally, both Mattison and Nwangwu are currently injured, making it crucial for the Vikings to consider adding another backup running back.
It’s worth noting that other teams are also in search of running back help. The Indianapolis Colts are dealing with a contract dispute with Jonathan Taylor, while the New Orleans Saints face the absence of Alvin Kamara due to a three-game suspension.
Earlier this week, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported that the Saints were close to signing Hunt. However, the Colts intervened and presented a more attractive offer. This turn of events has put Hunt’s 2023 destination in question once again.
Hunt began his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he thrived for two seasons and received accolades as an Offensive Rookie of the Year finalist. Unfortunately, he faced setbacks in subsequent years due to suspensions and injuries.
During the previous season, Hunt managed to avoid any major issues and played in all 17 games for the Browns. Teams interested in signing him hope he can maintain his availability and contribute positively this fall.
The Vikings, Colts, and Saints are all looking to bolster their running back depth, recognizing the importance of strong backup options to support their starters and address potential in-game injuries.
