Al-Logari was a one-time engineering student and had been freed from a high security prison by the Taliban.

As the Taliban took over Afghanistan, they emptied jails holding their own prisoners and Islamic State terrorists opposed to them and the U.S.

Edmund Fitton-Brown, a senior U.N. counterterrorism official, said “It’s hard to explain what the thinking was in letting out people who were a threat to the Taliban”.

Al-Logari has a history of terrorist behavior. In 2017, he was involved in a plot in New Delhi, India, but was caught and transferred to the CIA.
