‘Wicked’, the acclaimed adaptation, saw Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande bag joint Best Actress Awards. This honor of theirs was shared with ‘Emilia Pérez’ leading lady, Zoe Saldana.

Netflix’s original, ‘Emilia Pérez,’ accumulated four awards in total, one of which was the distinguished Best International Feature. The protagonist of the groundbreaking series, Karla Sofía Gascón, engineered one of the event’s most captivating scenes, as she accepted the Astra Game Changer Award.

Gascón, an inspiring transwoman actress, spotlighted her personal journey in an industry that’s gradually moving towards proper and true representation. This was signaled as a pivotal moment in the ceremony.

On the technical front, Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Two’ garnered the lion’s share of awards, with a total of four. These spanned the vital areas of visual effects and cinematography.

Adding more feathers to ‘Emilia Pérez’’ cap were the recognitions for its musical attributes. The show’s score and original song—both masterpieces of Camille and Clément Ducol—arrived into the spotlight, winning them plaudits.

Anna Kendrick, stepping into the directorial side for the first time, clinched the Best First Feature award for her first venture, the true-crime documentary titled ‘Woman of the Hour.’ This was a remarkable achievement in her career’s new chapter.

The Astra Filmmaker on the Rise Award was claimed by Jennifer Esposito for ‘Fresh Kills’. This honor amplified her stature and was a testament to her growing influence in the industry.

The evening also saw the award debut of the Artisan Icon Award, which was handed over to Colleen Atwood, a decades-rich costume design maestro. This award was a unique initiative to celebrate contributors away from the limelight, enhancing the integrity of the cinematic process.

Two other celebrations of the unseen champions were composer Kris Bowers and cinematographer Jomo Fray, earning the Artisan Achievement and Artisan Spotlight awards respectively. Their honours were a salute to the crafting of movies beyond the on-screen spectacle.

With the theme of change spiralling throughout the night, recognition was bestowed upon Monica Barbaro through the Breakthrough Award. Her journey, which resonates with the current entertainment industry’s inclination towards evolution, was prominently recognised.

Gascón marked another high point when she was crowned alongside Barbaro. Her path towards challenging industry norms and the usual portrayal of roles was met with recognition.

A profound sentiment echoed by Gascón on the night was her assertion that ‘Cinema is about truth—whether it’s the truth of who we are, who we dream to be, or the truth we want to show the world.’

Her words pivoted around the essence of cinema, conveying the significance of the night. As realities and dreams intersected on the night of the 2024 Astra Awards, this proclamation was a fitting end to the event, signifying unified celebration of these truths.
