The reactions from international leaders, including from allies like Australia, Canada, Italy, and France, remained undeclared publicly as of Monday morning.
While some global leaders seemed reticent, others didn’t hesitate to denounce the violence with unwavering fortitude. The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, who recently visited the U.S. for meetings with President Biden, expressed his distress upon hearing the news. He reiterated the necessity of maintaining a strictly non-violent approach to political matters, a sentiment echoed by several British news outlets. Representation from Israel was equally vocal in its response with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu taking to social media to share his thoughts.
Both Prime Minister Netanyahu and his spouse voiced their shock at the news of the second attempt, combining their relief at its failure with the sincere belief that safety should never be a matter of luck. To underscore their warmth toward the former president and his wife Melania, they hoped that comprehensive measures would be implemented henceforth to preemptively foil such fatal attacks on any presidential candidate in the U.S.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who himself has been a topic of discussion between Trump and Democratic vice president Kamala Harris, boldly declared President Trump as being under threat until he tastes victory. Orbán, recognized for his admiration for Trump, offered his prayers in a show of solidarity.
Trump’s trajectory, akin to that of Orbán’s, has been defined by his stern opposition to Western aid to Ukraine, and has sparked conversations about the continuity of U.S. assistance to Ukraine should he win the upcoming November elections. Furthermore, Trump has been assertive in his stand that the war could be ended before his potential second term begins in January 2025. However, the specifics of how he would achieve this remain undisclosed, adding an element of suspense to his claims.
The motive of the alleged attacker, Routh, is yet to be divulged by the FBI. Nevertheless, several media outlets both locally and internationally are hinting at his perceived support for Ukraine, possibly through recruitment efforts for Kyiv’s war through the International Legion Defense of Ukraine. Contradicting rumors surrounding Routh’s involvement in Ukrainian conflict have surfaced, however, clear evidence is lacking. In contrast, Ukrainian officials labeled these circulating rumors as entirely unfounded.
Reports claiming that Routh has connections to the International Legion of the Man Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine are being stringently denied. In a social media post, the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, composed of overseas volunteers, clarified that Routh had not served with them in any capacity.
Interestingly, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, chose not to comment on the suspect. Instead, he expressed relief that Trump was unscathed in the incident. Highlighting the importance of the rule of law over political violence, Zelenskyy commended the swiftness with which the alleged assailant was apprehended and hoped for everyone’s safety.

On the flip-side, Ukrainian officials claimed that Russia was attempting to generate ‘conspiracy theories’, leveraging this violent political event to their advantage. Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, asserted that the Kremlin was trying to pit the assassination attempt on Trump against Ukraine in the realm of public opinion.
According to Kovalenko, there would be a flood of conspiracy theories about the ‘Ukrainian trace’, aimed at implicating Ukraine falsely. Certain that they could swiftly dispel such fictitious narratives, he denounced all such theories as downright lies.
