President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his stance on the strategic importance of Greenland to U.S. national security, suggesting that Denmark should consider transferring control of the island to the United States.
During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump emphasized Greenland’s significance, stating, “We need Greenland very badly. You look at the Russian ships, the Chinese ships, they’re all over the place. They’re surrounding.”
Trump also indicated that Denmark might face economic repercussions if it resists negotiations, mentioning the possibility of imposing tariffs.
This renewed interest in Greenland has elicited strong reactions from Danish and Greenlandic officials. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, asserted, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale.”
Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, echoed this sentiment, reaffirming that Greenland is not on the market.
The geopolitical significance of Greenland, due to its location and natural resources, has been acknowledged by various global powers, including Russia. The Kremlin has expressed that the Arctic region, encompassing Greenland, falls within its sphere of “national and strategic interests.”
