President-elect Donald Trump has criticized the Biden administration for selling off sections of the southern border wall, describing the action as “almost a criminal act.” He expressed his intention to seek a restraining order to halt these sales, emphasizing the financial inefficiency and potential security risks associated with dismantling the barrier.
The Biden administration has been auctioning unused portions of the border wall, with reports indicating that materials are being sold at a fraction of their original cost. For instance, some buyers have purchased sections at three cents on the dollar and have offered to resell them to the government at significantly higher prices.
Trump highlighted the economic implications of these sales, noting that the cost of reconstructing the wall would be substantially higher due to increased material and labor expenses. He stated, “They know that we’re going to use it and if we don’t have it we’re going to have to rebuild it and it will cost double what it cost years ago and that’s hundreds of millions of dollars.”
In response to these developments, Republican Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri has called for an immediate cessation of the auctions. In a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Schmitt emphasized that the sales recoup less than 0.02% of taxpayer money used to secure these materials and accused the administration of sabotaging the incoming Trump administration.
The Biden administration has not yet publicly responded to these criticisms. The sale of border wall materials comes amid ongoing debates over immigration policy and border security, with the incoming Trump administration signaling plans to reinforce and expand the border barrier as a key component of its agenda.
