Trump Seizes Victory in 2024, Hollywood Reels in Shock

As election disappointment sank in among Democrats, unease pervaded Hollywood’s ranks. Late Tuesday, the prospect of Donald Trump returning to the White House in 2024 created palpable tension. Many held onto a glimmer of hope for a repeat of the 2020 elections if the so-called ‘Blue Wall’ swing states did not disappoint on Wednesday morning. However, those hopes were quashed when Wisconsin was announced for Trump, securing the requisite 270 electoral votes.

Not one to dally, Trump immediately took to the stage and declared his win at a victory gathering at Mar-a-Lago in the very early morning hours. His trademark style of circuitous and forthright speech punctuated his statement of a ‘great’ victory. Meanwhile, as Wednesday began and supporters assembled for an expected jubilant event at her Howard University alma mater, Kamala Harris didn’t make any comment.

Her campaign’s co-chair, Cedric Richmond, informed the crowd that she was to address the nation later that day. Almost immediate was the reaction to Trump’s victory on the internet, with many Democrats and notable Hollywood figures voicing their disappointment and apprehension for the future under another Trump administration. The responses varied in intensity and brevity, but many were unable to hold back.

Former President Barack Obama shared his thoughts in a statement, saying, ‘Throughout the campaign trail, I emphasized that America has faced numerous challenges in recent years. From handling a unique pandemic and the resultant financial difficulties, to quickly evolving changes and a pervasive feeling of stagnation despite relentless efforts. These circumstances have affected democratic incumbents globally, and America hasn’t escaped this effect, as last night’s result shows. Fortunately, we can overcome these issues, but it requires earnest dialogue and a respect for constitutional principles and democratic tenets that form our nation’s backbone.’

Prominent Trump critic, Bette Midler, took to a H.L. Mencken quote to express her feelings. Jamie Lee Curtis penned a thoughtful message, saying, ‘The verdict is in. Some are rejoicing, possibly even relishing in their triumph. Others are shocked, grappling with the crushing sensation of defeat. Realistically, these reactions would have been the same regardless of the victor, a testament to the nature of American democracy. But what’s the implication?’

‘Expect a return to more limiting times, some predict a regimen that’s severely restrictive,’ she continued. ‘Many anticipate their rights being encroached upon and denied. Various minority groups and young individuals are filled with fear. The LGBT+ community is particularly apprehensive. A number of women foresee difficulties in accessing necessary and deserved reproductive healthcare. In response to these fears, there are those, including myself, who pledge to help.’

On his radio broadcast the following morning, Charlamagne Tha God, a staunch Kamala Harris supporter, recognized the election result. He attributed Trump’s win more to economic and border issues than to ‘racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-semitism’. ‘Many Democrats are in search of a scapegoat. Let me clarify that it’s not a single factor’, he conveyed.

In his words, ‘I sincerely believe Trump addresses people’s concerns more effectively than Democrats do. There will be discussions on misinformation and societal ignorance, all of which I understand, however, sophistication isn’t needed to realize that you can’t meet your bills ends or afford groceries. One is unlikely to forget an experience, irrespective of whether the words or actions that led to it are remembered…’

He further elaborated, ‘Don’t simply attribute Trump’s win to racism, sexism, homophobia, or anti-semitism. Though he has leveraged these dark aspects of American history, and there are those who resonate with his rhetoric and voted based on these factors, I firmly believe that the majority voted for him because they wish to have more money and security …’

He added, ‘I am not validating Trump as the solution to these problems. What I’m suggesting is that Trump has successfully created an impression that he can resolve these issues, something that the Democrats have failed to do. Again, this victory isn’t solely about racism or sexism. However much I agree that these aspects had a contributing role, above all, it’s the economy that’s the deciding factor.’

Despite mounting fears and disappointment among Democrats and Hollywood figures, some took the result in stride. Long-standing debates and concerns over economic difficulties, border security, and healthcare came into focus once again. The reactions ranged from disappointment to acceptance, and from fear for the future to a resolve to fight back and assist those in need.

One thing is clear, Trump’s victory has sparked a wide array of emotions. Yet, at the heart of these reactions is the undying belief in dialogue and democratic norms, a sentiment echoed by prominent figures like Barack Obama. Despite their fears, Democrats are ready to listen, learn and continue to engage in securing a future they believe in.

In the end, the 2024 Presidential Election didn’t just determine the next occupant of the White House. It unearthed deep-rooted issues, spurred important conversations, and raised questions about the country’s direction. While some are celebrating and others are mourning, this moment serves as a reminder of the diverse and deeply felt perspectives that define the United States of America.
