President-elect Donald Trump has mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following his resignation announcement, suggesting that Trudeau stepped down because he realized Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.”
Trump further elaborated on the potential benefits of such a merger, claiming that it would eliminate tariffs, reduce taxes, and enhance security for Canada. He added, “Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
This is not the first time Trump has made such remarks. In previous statements, he referred to Trudeau as the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada” and suggested that if Canada couldn’t handle U.S. tariffs, it should consider becoming a U.S. state.
Trudeau announced his resignation after more than nine years in office, citing internal party pressures and declining approval ratings. He will remain in his position until a successor is chosen.
Trump’s comments have sparked a range of reactions, with some viewing them as humorous jabs, while others perceive them as undermining Canadian sovereignty. As the political landscape evolves, the implications of such statements on U.S.-Canada relations remain to be seen.
