President Donald Trump has issued a clear and uncompromising warning to Beijing: either roll back your 34% retaliatory tariffs on American goods by April 8—or face a punishing new 50% tariff on all Chinese imports.

The move is the latest escalation in the brewing trade standoff between the world’s two largest economies. Following President Trump’s sweeping “Liberation Day” initiative, which imposed a 34% tariff on Chinese goods as part of a broader economic reset, China responded with mirror tariffs targeting American exports. Trump’s response? Increase the pressure.

In a post on Truth Social, the President accused China of long-standing trade abuses, including currency manipulation, illegal subsidies, and backdoor barriers to American products. He made it clear that any nation responding to U.S. tariffs with retaliation will be met with even tougher measures.

“China has until April 8 to walk back their tariffs,” Trump stated. “If they don’t, a 50% tariff goes into effect on all Chinese imports the very next day. We will not be bullied, and we will not negotiate under threat.”

He also made it known that all pending discussions with Beijing will be called off if the tariffs are not rescinded. Instead, Trump signaled that the administration would focus on building new agreements with countries actively seeking trade talks—nations, he said, that are ready to deal fairly and respect America’s economic interests.

China’s 34% tariff hike was announced just days after the U.S. unveiled its Liberation Day tariffs targeting dozens of countries. In a tone-deaf response, Beijing urged Washington to “cancel unilateral tariff measures and resolve issues through equal consultation.” But Trump isn’t budging.

Markets reacted sharply to the standoff. The Dow tumbled 750 points, with other indexes falling in tandem amid fears of a prolonged trade battle. Yet despite pressure from Wall Street and global financial analysts, the White House is holding the line.

Administration officials say this is not just about trade—it’s about principle. “China has exploited U.S. markets for decades,” said one senior official. “President Trump is the first leader with the courage to stop it.”

The tariff war is rapidly becoming a test of wills, and with the April 8 deadline fast approaching, all eyes are now on Beijing. Will China blink? Or will Trump bring down the hammer and escalate the fight?

One thing is certain: under this administration, America no longer backs down.
