In the initial weeks of his second term, President Donald Trump has achieved an approval rating surpassing any point during his first tenure. A recent CBS News and YouGov survey indicates that 53% of Americans approve of his performance, while 47% disapprove.
A significant factor contributing to this heightened approval is the perception that President Trump is fulfilling his campaign promises. The poll reveals that 70% of respondents believe he is delivering on his commitments, with many describing him as “tough” and “energetic.” Anthony Salvanto, CBS News’ executive director of elections and surveys, noted, “He’s doing, in the eyes of the public, what he said he would do in the campaign. There is political value in that.”
Public opinion on specific policies remains mixed. For instance, 59% support the administration’s initiative to deport individuals residing in the U.S. illegally, and 64% approve of deploying U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. Conversely, the nation is divided on the use of large detention centers, with 48% in favor and 52% opposed.
In foreign policy matters, 54% of Americans back President Trump’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, only 13% view his proposal for the U.S. to take over Gaza as a “good idea,” while 47% consider it unfavorable.
Economic concerns persist, with 66% of respondents feeling that the President is not sufficiently focused on reducing prices. Tariffs on goods from China receive majority support, whereas penalties on imports from Mexico, Europe, and Canada garner less than 50% favorability.
This surge in approval reflects a public perception that President Trump is actively pursuing his stated objectives, resonating with a substantial portion of the American populace.
