Legal proceedings have begun against a Georgia resident who stands accused of a savage act resulting in the unjust death of a man in Central Islip during the autumn of 2022. The principal defendant, identified as 27-year-old Christopher Perdomo, is one of seven individuals implicated in an indictment. It is alleged that this group pursued Linver Ortiz Ponce, aged 29, culminating in a violent showdown wherein Perdomo allegedly fired multiple shots at Ortiz Ponce as he sought to escape in the grounds of a Bay Shore church, according to information disclosed by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
District Attorney Ray Tierney commented on the case, expressing dismay over the senselessly precipitous events leading to the alleged slaying. He emphasized that the incident, with no evident trigger for hostile action, represents an egregious violation of basic human decency. Tierney stated his conviction that no individual should undergo such aggression for an act as innocuous as parking a vehicle.
The narrative unfolded further to incorporate an additional member of the group. Kayla Alvarenga, a Central Islip resident aged 22, was revealed to have initiated the sequence of events. Reports from the prosecution suggest she contacted Perdomo and others subsequent to requesting Ortiz Ponce to relocate his red Chevrolet Camaro from her property’s frontage in the late-night hours of September 16th, 2022. Moreover, Alvarenga is purported to have encouraged Perdomo to discharge his weapon following his physical assault of Ortiz Ponce.
Further details pertaining to the night in question indicate Perdomo’s arrival to Alvarenga’s residence in a BMW, accompanied by three underage offenders, two 17 and one 16 years old. Prosecutors allege this vehicle was obtained illicitly earlier in the evening during a car theft executed in Bay Shore.
The sequence of events escalated drastically as prosecutors allege Ortiz Ponce was forcibly removed from his vehicle by the aforementioned group, who subsequently misappropriated his Camaro. As the scenario intensified, two more juvenile participants are reported to have joined Alvarenga in the misappropriated Camaro.
Post this assault and theft, Ortiz Ponce was observed departing the initial location on foot. However, his respite was short-lived, as the group in the two purloined vehicles located him at a Shell gas station, and once again captured him, forcing him into the stolen BMW, as documented by the station’s surveillance cameras.
Information presented by the prosecution details Alvarenga’s advice to the group on their next move. Allegedly, she suggested a locale to execute the act — a church she assumed lacked external surveillance systems. The group is believed to have transported Ortiz Ponce to said location with the intent to cause him harm.
The purported illusion of a ‘camera-free zone’ at the church was dispelled. Contrary to Alvarenga’s assertion, the church indeed possessed surveillances footage which documented the defendants’ arrival and subsequent departure after the alleged lethal act.
Last week, the lead defendant Perdomo was presented before the court for his arraignment. He was acknowledged with charges of first and second-degree murder, accentuated by additional felonies including kidnapping, robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, and conspiracy. If found guilty of the supreme charge, Perdomo could face a life-long prison sentence.
In response to the severe implications of the accusations, Acting state Supreme Court Justice Anthony Senft ruled for Perdomo’s detention in the county facility. Further proceedings included Alvarenga, who is scheduled for her arraignment on similar charges on the 30th of October.
The remaining five participants in this tragic event, all youthful offenders, continue to be held in custody. The prosecution has taken a rigorous stance in their intent to effectively try this shocking case.
Terms of resolution for this case remain a top priority for the District Attorney’s office. DA Ray Tierney voiced his commitment to secure a rightful justice for the late Mr. Ortiz Ponce, as well as for his grieving family.
He strongly affirmed his determination to navigate this complex trial, thereby ensuring that every aspect of this heinous crime is thoroughly examined and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
