A man of 73 years named Jacinto Remigo lost his life tragically during a burglary at his residence based in the bustling city of New York. This unfortunate incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, November 23. Mr. Remigo was trying to flee a home-invasion situation in Manhattan, during which time he fell from the window of his apartment, located on the sixth floor of the building.
Mr. Remigo’s residence, set in the Washington Heights neighborhood, was broken into by three burglars around 4:40 am on the ill-fated day of November 23. To commemorate his audacious efforts in trying to escape the situation, it’s necessary to mention that he attempted to escape by descending from his sixth-floor apartment.
After breaking into the building, the first burglar managed to enter through a sixth-floor window. Here, the suspect let his accomplices in, demonstrating the planned nature of this theft. Following this, the invaders forced entry into Remigo’s apartment, exposing the victims to their malicious intent.
Once inside, the suspects restrained a man, aged 40. They ruthlessly stole a gold chain and cash amounting to $200 and then absconded from the crime scene. Their victim, understood to be a relative of Mr. Remigo, thankfully experienced no physical injuries during the incident.
Fearful of the burglars, Remigo tried to evade the culprits through an open window, in a desperate attempt to safeguard his life. It was during this desperate flight that Mr. Remigo faced his tragic end.
The misfortune unfolded further when Remigo fell off the window, only to land on the scaffolding located outside the building. He was found shortly before 5:00 am, a mere 20 minutes after the burglary commenced.
Upon finding Remigo, he was rushed to Harlem Hospital in a critical condition. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, Mr. Remigo was declared deceased later at the hospital, a mournful conclusion to the series of unfortunate events.
Meanwhile, a surveillance footage revealed a key suspect sauntering on the scaffolding that encircled the building. This individual somehow managed to sneak inside the apartment complex and rode the elevator up to the ill-fated sixth floor where Remigo resided.
This individual then played the role of the insider, letting his accomplices in by helping them up the fire escape. This raised the question of whether the culprits had inside information of the building’s layout and the victims in the burglary.
The link between the victims and the suspects remains unclear. The NYPD has not been able to identify any suspects thus far. However, an investigation is ongoing with continuous efforts being made to crack the case and bring justice for Mr. Remigo.
A close acquaintance of Remigo, Heriberto Garcia, shared the chilling scene of the incident. He recounted watching Remigo escape onto a small ledge from the window, aiming to reach another window, only to be hindered by an air conditioning unit. Immediately after, he tragically lost his life, falling from the ledge.
Richard Ramsundarsingh, a resident living two floors down from Remigo, reported being jolted awake by the sound of the fall on the morning of the burglary. ‘It’s scary to think that it could have been anybody. What if they chose this floor or the one before it?’ he expressed, aware of the gravity of the situation and slightly unnerved by the near-death experience.
Most poignantly, Ramsundarsingh continued, ‘It’s shocking when you realize how close it was. Someone lost their life, and it was only two levels up. It makes you realize how fleeting life really is. One minute you are alive and in the next, gone.’
Hence, anyone with noteworthy information about the incident has been encouraged to share details with the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers. The police department hopes that community cooperation will lead the way to finding the culprits responsible for the heinous crime.
The incident has led to an increased sense of fear and uncertainty for the residents of the building and the broader neighbourhood. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks and dangers that lurk in urban environments and the need for increased safety and security.
The tragic demise of Mr. Remigo has sent shockwaves through his community, and to a broader extent, the city as a whole. As the investigation continues, his loved ones, friends, and neighbors can only hope for justice. The number to contact NYPD’s Crime Stoppers with any useful information is 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
