The 2024 SEC schedule release has been analyzed by Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel and Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde and Ross Dellenger, and they have examined some of the most important matchups in the Texas Longhorns program’s debut season. Texas really impressed me here.
This is exactly what they had in mind, right? They didn’t move because they lacked money – they had plenty. Nor did they move for the sake of a better path to a title within the Big 12. They made this move for excitement, or simply because they wanted to.
I mean, let’s be honest here, Texas has gone 91-79 since 2010. That’s kind of comical, right? They even lost to Kansas once! But they grew tired of playing these teams, and in 2024, with Arch Manning lined up as the projected starting quarterback, they have at least four games that are sure to be the biggest shows of the week.
To start with, they’re playing against Michigan in only the second week of the season. Brand-wise, you can’t really get much bigger than this. It’s a fantastic non-conference game, and it’s the kind of game we need.
Georgia will grapple with Texas two weeks after that. Then we have Red River, always a major game. And finally, the big one – they’ll resume their rivalry with A&M. And here’s the kicker – I honestly don’t care if both those teams have dismally average 5-6 records at the time, this game is going to be phenomenal!
Texas also has to go to Arkansas to renew that rivalry, which was one of the biggest rivalries in the country once upon a time. They could wind up with a 2-4 record in these six games.
But even if they get a 4-2 result in that slate, having won at Michigan against Georgia on neutral site Dallas at A&M? Arch better be Peyton. Yes, it’s going to be phenomenal for Texas, and they absolutely must be ready.
I think this is a crucial season for Texas in terms of ramping up and establishing some credibility before going into this. That’s because, let’s face it, they’ve been little other than mediocre for over a decade now.
But those games…. I’m telling you, the Arkansas game is a big one – Texas better come ready to Fayetteville. Because Arkansas will be ready for them.
The excitement for Texas continues to build as the 2024 SEC schedule was just released, and taking a look at the matchups and conference games, it’s clear that this is a season to look forward to.
This isn’t just any ordinary schedule, there’s a lot going on here. But the biggest thing that jumps out is the non-conference game against Michigan in Week 2.
This game is huge for the Texas program as well as college football as a whole. It’s a brand name vs. brand name game, and it’s going to be a big moneymaker.
Not only that, but it’s going to give us a glimpse of what Texas is made of. Texas, as we all know, has extremely high expectations every year, and this game is going to be a huge Test.
But it doesn’t stop there. The Georgia game is just two weeks later, and the Longhorns follow that up with the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma.
That game is always circled on the calendar and is an intense rivalry rich in history. But that’s not even the biggest game of the season. No, the biggest game is the return of the rivalry with Texas A&M.
The Longhorns and Aggies haven’t played each other since 2011, and for some, that simply feels like too long. It’s going to be a huge thing to see them back on the field together, and that game will be a sign of how the rivalry can rekindle old emotions.
In addition to all of this, there is the renewed rivalry between Texas and Arkansas. The game takes on even more significance since both teams are now part of the SEC.
It’s fair to say that not everything is rosy for the Longhorns. This is one of those schedules where, if you’re not ready, you’re going to be in trouble. But if Texas is truly committed to the cause, they can make serious inroads on the national scene by winning a few of these games.
At the end of the day, this schedule is a force-multiplying effort for the Texas program. Even if they come up a little short in some games, the exposure is invaluable.
It’s an exciting time for college football, and the 2024 season is going to fit right into that narrative. And for Texas, it’s going to be an especially important time, and they must make sure they come out firing every single week.
Texas is about to embark upon something exciting – they’ve got all the potential and talent they could ever need. But potential and talent mean nothing if they’re not orchestrated properly.
It’s going to be an important season for Texas, even beyond just those matchups. It’s going to be a season for them to truly set themselves up for the future.
They’ve arrived, but now they must prove that they truly belong here. The SEC is a big and tough conference, and there are no easy games. The Longhorns must take it one day at a time, one game at a time.
All of this is to say that Texas has a unique opportunity in front of them. They’ll have the chance to go out and prove that they belong in the SEC, that they’ve got what it takes to go toe-to-toe with any team in the conference.
Ultimately, though, it all comes down to them and how they approach the season. If they’re ready to step up, they could make serious waves this year.
