Fans paused for 60 seconds to remember the 15 lives lost and dozens injured after a terrorist attack on New Year’s Day. The attacker, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Army veteran from Texas, drove a truck through a crowded Bourbon Street, carrying an ISIS flag. The bowl game, originally scheduled for New Year’s Day, was postponed due to the tragedy and rescheduled for Thursday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Leadership Addresses Safety Concerns
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry addressed concerns about public safety ahead of the game, reassuring citizens and visitors of New Orleans’ security. Speaking on Fox & Friends Thursday morning, Landry emphasized the importance of resilience in the wake of the attack.
“One of the most important things is to ensure that each of those victims did not die in vain,” Landry stated. “All of them came to the city to enjoy entertainment and ring in the new year. We can’t live in fear. We need to live our lives and ensure that people can come to New Orleans and have a good time. I’m convinced the city is safe.”

Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart also commented on the incident during pregame warmups, calling the attack “saddening and scary.” Smart encouraged his team to focus on gratitude amidst the tragedy.
“Things are bigger than football,” Smart told ESPN. “Sometimes we lose sight of how blessed we are to have the opportunity to play. Gratitude often takes away anxiety.”
