In New York, Nelson Pizarro, a 42-year-old Staten Island resident, has been given a 16-year sentence for his part in the shooting of a NYPD detective. Joining him in court were concerned family members, as well as several members of the police force. Last August, Pizarro confessed to a charge of attempted second-degree murder stemming from an event that unfolded in New Springville on the 20th of January, 2022.
A significant number of NYPD officers and detectives attended the sentencing ceremony in a show of solidarity for Detective Dominick Libretti. Libretti had been wounded in the leg during the fateful encounter. Pizarro, dressed in a muted grey tracksuit and black trainers, quietly handed over a bag of personal items, including an extra pair of eyeglasses, to the court officers in anticipation of his upcoming sojourn in prison.
The accused shared a tearful farewell with his mother, a tender moment with his girlfriend, and some courage-boosting words from his sibling before taking his position next to his lawyer. Before proceeding with the final verdict, the judge asked Pizarro if he wanted to address the court. Pizarro responded, indicating his hope that neither his family nor the detective’s loved ones would have to go through anything similar in future.
The presiding judge considered the sentence befitting of Pizarro’s crime. He emphasized that this wasn’t merely an attack against Detective Libretti but against the whole community. The judge warned Pizarro that his actions had cost him nearly two decades of freedom. After his sentence was the declared, Pizarro expressed his love to his family as he was led away by the officers. His mother was seen in an overtly emotional state.
Had Pizarro been convicted by a jury on the more serious charges, he could have faced several decades in prison, possibly even life. The incident, which prompted Pizarro’s arrest, occurred during a drug raid in a two-floor duplex apartment located on Rockne Street. As police announced their presence, Pizarro abruptly retreated back into a room and opened fire.
Pizarro sprayed numerous bullets toward the officers, many of which impacted Detective Libretti’s shield. During the intense clash, Pizarro was struck in the leg by a bullet, and another round hit a nearby residence. A dog belonging to Pizarro was also tragically caught in the crossfire and killed.
Pizarro insists he was not aware it was law enforcement officials who had barged into his home. He has explained that he believed his residence was being robbed. Several months after his arrest, Pizarro’s family and friends managed to put up his $5 million bail.
In court, Pizarro’s lawyer commented that his client was relieved to finally put the case to rest. Pizarro accepted the consequences of his actions that terrifying morning, expressing gratitude that while injuries were incurred, no lives were lost. His attorney contended that, had Pizarro been aware it was police officers conducting a warrant search on his house, he would never have resorted to violence.
Committed to Pizarro’s cause, the attorney made a passionate plea about alterations to the methods police use to execute search warrants. He proposed the use of body cameras for officers and the cessation of no-knock search warrants. However, no immediate response to these proposals was issued by the NYPD.
In related news, a co-defendant, Anthony Marshall, also implicated in the incident, has confessed to gun and cocaine sale charges and has been sentenced to serve a seven-year prison term. Investigations that eventually led to the raid uncovered that large volumes of drugs were being trafficked from the residential property. Both Marshall and Pizarro have prior records related to drug offences on Staten Island.
Detective Dominick Libretti, hailed by his colleagues outside the courtroom, opted not to comment further on the case. In honor of the brave detective, local community members organized a parade, which took place several weeks following the incident.
Libretti later shared that the event was highly charged for him emotionally, as it reminded him how fortunate he was to have survived that frightful morning. He deeply appreciated the support shown by the large turnout and said he was moved to tears at times when observing how many had attended the event in his honor.
On the day of the parade, the District Attorney’s office issued a statement. It described the Pizarro’s act as one that put multiple lives at risk, particularly Detective Dominick Libretti’s. The statement reiterated the jurisdiction’s zero tolerance for violence against law enforcement and affirmed that justice had been served.
The District Attorney recognized the NYPD men and women for their daily sacrifices and finished the statement by pointing out that due to their diligent work, Nelson Pizarro would be held accountable and spend the better part of the next two decades in prison for his despicable criminal actions.
