Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) is sounding the alarm over America’s skyrocketing national debt, calling it a serious national security risk that threatens both economic stability and military strength.
In a recent interview on ABC News’ This Week, Mullin pointed out that the U.S. is now spending nearly $1 trillion per year just on interest payments—a staggering amount that now exceeds the entire Defense Department budget. He warned that this financial mismanagement is weakening America’s ability to project strength on the world stage while empowering adversaries like China.
Debt Crisis Undermining U.S. Military Strength
Mullin stressed that America cannot afford to keep borrowing at reckless levels, especially when so much of the government’s spending is financed by foreign nations. He argued that continuing down this path undermines U.S. sovereignty and leaves the country vulnerable to economic blackmail.
“The more we borrow, the more we weaken ourselves. We are spending more money paying off interest than we are defending this country.”
Mullin also pointed out that rising debt payments could eventually force military budget cuts, leaving America less equipped to confront global threats.
Musk’s DOGE Department Slashing Federal Waste
Mullin acknowledged that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has taken aggressive action to reduce government waste, including cutting federal payrolls and eliminating bloated, unnecessary programs.
While Democrats and bureaucrats have pushed back against Musk’s cuts, Mullin defended them as a necessary step toward restoring fiscal responsibility. He warned that without bold action, the national debt could soon trigger a credit downgrade, which would further erode America’s negotiating power with global financial institutions.
Time for Fiscal Sanity Before It’s Too Late
With federal debt now exceeding $34 trillion, Senator Mullin is urging Congress to stop the reckless spending before it’s too late. He emphasized that fiscal responsibility is not just an economic issue—it’s a national security necessity.
“Our enemies see this. They know that if they can’t beat us militarily, they can weaken us financially. We need to wake up before we hand them victory without a fight.”
As the debate over government spending continues, Mullin, Musk, and fiscal conservatives are leading the charge to restore sanity to Washington—before America’s financial crisis turns into a national security catastrophe.
When asked about Elon Musk’s efforts to layoff federal employees, GOP Sen. Mullin tells @JonKarl the move is necessary to control debt.
“It hurts us because we don’t want anybody to lose their job. But at the same time, we have to get it under control.” https://t.co/MbYZfpYm86 pic.twitter.com/hzC1q8umzS
