Only four days following a harrowing incident involving his spouse, Scott Shriner, bass guitarist for the acclaimed band Weezer, graced the stage once more. This past Saturday, the musician, now 59, chose not to publicly comment on the recent unsettling developments as he and his bandmates delivered their performance at the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival happening in Indio, California.
Shriner, who officially became part of the iconic 90s rock ensemble Weezer in 2001, along with his band, was a last-minute entry to the music festival’s opening weekend roster. The line-up change happened just a few days prior to the incident involving Shriner’s spouse, renowned author Jillian Lauren Shriner.
On a fateful Wednesday afternoon in Eagle Rock, a neighborhood situated in Northeast Los Angeles, near their residence, 51-year-old Jillian was unexpectedly involved in a police chase after she reportedly pointed a firearm at local law enforcement officers on her front lawn. In response, police officers shot her in the shoulder.
Axis of the police’s pursuit through the residential area entangled Jillian, who had recently made her cancer diagnosis public. After the shooting, Jillian was rushed to a local healthcare facility by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. The police, meanwhile, issued her an absentee booking under the accusations of attempted murder.
Despite the personal turmoil, Scott opted to remain steadfast and devoted to his musical craft during Weezer’s set at the Coachella festival on Saturday. The band graced the audience with a colorful array of their most beloved hits. Notably, the repertoire for the evening comprised crowd-pleasers like ‘My Name Is Jonas’, ‘Hash Pipe’, and ‘Pork and Beans’.
Scott was spotted passionately performing alongside his fellow Weezer members, Rivers Cuomo, Brian Bell, and Patrick Wilson. His distinctive stage attire consisted of a relaxed, pastel yellow short-sleeved button-down shirt paired with light blue denim. His choice of guitar strap – a statement-making cheetah print – offered an additional intriguing detail.
The band had its roots planted in 1992 in Los Angeles, California, marking a near three-decade musical journey. Chart-topping successes that defined Weezer and its popularity include ‘Buddy Holly’ from 1994, ‘Say It Ain’t So’ from 1995, ‘Island in the Sun’ introduced in 2001, and ‘Undone–The Sweater Song’ from back in 1994.
After the unsettling encounter with the police, Jillian was transported to a hospital. Luckily, the injury she sustained seemed not to pose a threat to her life. The incident unfolded as a male individual involved in a three-car collision had strayed onto her neighbor’s property, leading to a pursuit involving two other male individuals.
Jillian stepped out of her house wielding a firearm. However, details regarding whether she discharged the weapon remain unclear. Following repeated orders by the officers to drop the weapon which were ignored, she pointed the gun at them, as per law enforcement accounts. As a result, the police retaliated by shooting her in the shoulder.
Following the gunshot injury, Jillian retreated into her house and emerged again shortly with her babysitter. Both women, hands raised, were instructed by the officers to move down the driveway where they were subsequently apprehended without further incident. Jillian conveyed to the officers her intention was simply to protect her household from the suspect that was darting around her front yard.
Authorities apprehended the male individual in question as well. At this point, it is not clear whether Scott had any direct involvement in the incident. Simultaneously, California Highway Patrol officers took the person responsible for the initial car crash into custody. He was subsequently issued a citation and released.
Jillian’s home yielded a nine-millimeter handgun during a preliminary investigation. Additionally, a woman involved in the initial three-car collision sustained moderate injuries. She was promptly brought to a hospital for treatment. However, according to local law enforcement, Jillian had no relation to the initial car collision that triggered these ensuing events.
Post the harrowing events, Jillian was released after posting a bond of $1million. No information regarding a court date or if she has retained legal representation is available presently. As for the remaining two suspects who fled the scene of the accident, they are still yet to be apprehended.
In a shocking revelation, just a few weeks before these events unfolded, Jillian announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer. Declining to elaborate on her exact diagnosis, she shared with the world her journey through treatment in a social media post, accompanied by an optimistic selfie from her hospital bed. Jillian, married to Scott since 2005, and a mother to two adopted children, is a renowned author known for her work in memoir and true crime literature.
