During her Senate confirmation hearing, Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi pledged to end the “weaponization” of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and restore its integrity.

Bondi, a former Florida Attorney General and long-time ally of President-elect Donald Trump, emphasized her commitment to depoliticizing the DOJ. She stated, “The Department of Justice should never be used as a tool for political gain. My goal is to ensure that justice is administered fairly and impartially.”

Democratic senators expressed concerns about Bondi’s impartiality, citing her previous defense of Trump during his first impeachment trial and her involvement in post-2020 election challenges. Senator Richard Blumenthal questioned her ability to maintain independence from the White House, asking, “Can you assure this committee that you will resist any attempts by the President to influence DOJ investigations for political purposes?”

Bondi responded, “My loyalty is to the Constitution and the American people. I will uphold the rule of law without fear or favor.”

Republican senators supported Bondi’s nomination, viewing her as a corrective measure against perceived liberal bias in the DOJ. Senator Lindsey Graham remarked, “Ms. Bondi’s commitment to restoring integrity to the DOJ is exactly what we need at this time.”

Bondi’s nomination is expected to proceed, with Republicans holding a majority in the Senate. If confirmed, she will be tasked with leading the DOJ during a period of heightened political polarization and scrutiny.
