A Columbus, Ohio substitute teacher is behind bars after allegedly attempting to hire one of her own students to carry out a murder-for-hire plot against her estranged husband.

Stephanie Demetrius, 44, was arrested and charged with first-degree conspiracy to commit murder after investigators say she approached a student at the Academy for Urban Scholars High School and offered $2,000 to kill her husband. According to court documents, the disturbing offer was made on March 26. Demetrius reportedly provided the student with specific details about her husband’s daily routine, including when he would be home alone, and even paid the student $250 up front as a down payment.

Fortunately, the plan was quickly foiled when the student’s mother discovered incriminating messages between Demetrius and her child and immediately notified authorities. Law enforcement acted swiftly, arresting Demetrius before any harm could be done.

Investigators described the evidence as “deeply troubling,” noting that the teacher’s communications with the student included instructions and logistical planning related to the murder plot. The case has stunned the local community, raising serious questions about how someone in a position of trust could attempt such a heinous act involving a minor.

Demetrius is being held on a $150,000 bond and is barred from contacting either her estranged husband or the student involved in the case. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April 11.

Officials have not disclosed whether additional charges may be filed, including potential child endangerment or solicitation of a minor in connection with the murder-for-hire scheme. The school district has stated that Demetrius has been immediately removed from all teaching assignments pending the outcome of the legal process.

The case has shocked parents and educators across the state, highlighting once again the importance of vigilance when it comes to the individuals placed in authority over students. While no physical harm came to the intended victim or the student, the betrayal of trust and the exploitation of a young person for such a violent purpose have left many shaken.

As the investigation continues, prosecutors say they will pursue the case aggressively. If convicted, Demetrius faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence.
