BELLE GLADE, FL - SEPTEMBER 26: Crime scene tape marks the fence at South Florida Crop Care company at Belle Glade Airport in Florida, 26 September 2001. US Attorney General John Ashcroft confirmed, 24 September, that one of the 19 hijackers responsible for the strikes that left almost 7,000 dead or missing had investigated the use of crop dusting airplanes that could possibly have been used in a terror attack, bringing the horror of germ warfare to the United States. In an unfortunate turn of events, Deputy Basil Powell, a dedicated member of the Palm Beach County corrections department, lost his life due to a shooting incident. He was off-duty at the time of the incident which occurred on Monday evening. Aged 39, Deputy Powell had been serving in the sheriff’s office for a period of three years. It has been reported that Powell was not just a random victim but was specifically ‘targeted and ambushed’ on his way back to his residence.

The incident has greatly shaken the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The tragic news hailing from Belle Glade, Florida reveals that it was during his off-duty hours that the corrections deputy succumbed to gunshot wounds. The office officially acknowledged the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the tragic demise of the corrections deputy.

It was on this fateful Monday evening that local authorities heard about gunfire in a quiet suburban neighborhood in Belle Glade. This came in just after the clock struck half past seven. A rapid response team was immediately put into action

In this dire situation, Deputy Powell, who celebrated his 39th birthday this year, was speedily transported to the nearest available healthcare facility. However, despite best efforts, he tragically passed away a short while afterwards.

The severity of the incident was not understated by investigators who reported that Powell was not an accidental victim of a stray bullet. In fact, they said that the deputy was ‘targeted and ambushed on his way back home’. The calculated nature of the crime adds another level of grievance to this incident.

Deputy Powell had only recently joined the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office, having pledged his commitment to the force as recent as October last year. His dedication and service to his community will surely be sorely missed.

A significant gesture of respect was offered to Powell by his colleagues at the sheriff’s office. They organized a night procession that concluded with the transportation of his body to the Medical Examiner’s Office. This procession demonstrated the office’s solidarity for their fallen comrade and noble servant of public safety.

The case remains open as the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has yet to procure details of a potential suspect or suspects. The killer or killers thus remain unidentified. This lack of information is a stark reminder of the nature of the crime and the determined effort required to bring justice to Deputy Powell.

The sheriff’s office remains as the primary investigative body tasked with solving this horrific crime. They continue to urge members of the community, or anyone else who may possess information regarding the incident, to come forward and assist the investigation.

As part a drive to collect critical information that could lead to the capture of the perpetrators, local law enforcement bodies are keen to receive any viable leads. An appeal has been set up through Crime Stoppers, which can be reached via the dedicated hotline at 1-800-458-TIPS.
