Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday that the city is scrambling to help the thousands of illegal migrants bused from Texas as some were turned away from local shelters.
In a statement about the influx of migrants in the city, Adams said “Since May, this administration, on its own, has safely and efficiently provided shelter, health care, education, and a host of other services to more than 11,000 people predominantly from Central and South America who are seeking a better life.”
“This is a remarkable achievement that has required – and will continue to require — the efforts of our entire team, and has become a reality that no city official, advocate, or court ever could have contemplated,” he continued.
“In this new and unforeseen reality, where we expect thousands more to arrive every week going forward, the city’s system is nearing its breaking point,” the mayor said.
“As a result, the city’s prior practices, which never contemplated the bussing of thousands of people into New York City, must be reassessed,” he noted.
Approximately 8,000 illegal migrants have been bused to New York City, according to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s spokesperson, Renae Eze.
Eze told the Daily Caller “Mayor Adams is an absolute hypocrite.”
“He’s complaining about a few thousand migrants being bused into his self-declared sanctuary city, yet was silent as President Biden flew planeloads of migrants into New York in the cover of night,” Eze added.
“And if Mayor Adams wants to see what the breaking point actually looks like, Governor Abbott’s invitation is still open for him to visit the border and the real border crisis firsthand,” the spokesperson concluded.
Washington, D.C., and Chicago are two other cities facing busloads of migrants from the border.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser have joined Adams in calling out Abbott’s buses, referring to the situation as a political play.
“In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” Abbott said when he chose New York City as the next destination.
“I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief,” Abbott added.
According to reports, 60 illegal migrant men were denied beds at shelters.
“The approximately 60 men reported on from Monday night arrived with a group of several hundred others and were provided shelter early the next day as we immediately informed relevant stakeholders,” Adams said.
“We will continue to work every day with those who want to partner on this vital work to provide these individuals with the shelter and services they so desperately need,” he concluded.
Just hours after his comments, Adams was pictured relaxing at New York Fashion Week.
He was pictured with tennis star Serena Williams, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and actress Anne Hathaway at the Michael Kors runway show.
Adams has been seen on several occasions partying with celebrities and models as his city faces issues with crime and homelessness.
