NFL’s Top 25 Free Agents Revealed Post Franchise Tagging

The NFL’s franchise tagging deadline has now passed, with only a pair of players tagged—wide receiver Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals and guard Trey Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs, the top two free agents from our original listing. Off the tag list but still in the news were Alaric Jackson of the Los Angeles Rams, a left tackle who ranks 11th on our initial list, securing a three-year contract worth $57 million, and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, originally sixth on our list, who agreed to a $80 million extension over four years with the Dallas Cowboys.

As we edge closer to Monday’s commencement of the free agency ‘tampering’ period, let’s take a look at the top 25 free agents of this offseason. While there are plenty of notable players up for grabs, we’ll start with Kansas City Chiefs safety, Justin Reid, who ranks 25th. Having made a significant impact within the Chiefs’ defense, Reid, at 28, would be a great addition for teams seeking an experienced and talented veteran.

At number 24 is Joey Bosa from the Los Angeles Chargers. Despite being a well-known figure, age and injury problems may constrain his transfer prospects. He turns 30 this July and injury struggles over the last three seasons have restricted his appearances. Nevertheless, if he can maintain his health, Bosa still has a lot to offer on the field.

Following Bosa at number 23 is Jonathan Allen, previously with the Washington Commanders. Despite a commendable eight-season stint with the Commanders, he was let go after a failed trade attempt. Playing only eight matches last season, Allen’s durability is an enticing attribute. Having recently turned 30, he can certainly contribute effectively in the short run.

Seattle Seahawks Linebacker Ernest Jones occupies the 22nd spot. He was twice traded during the previous season: initially from the Rams to the Titans before making his way to the Seahawks. Excelling in Seattle’s scheme, Jones delivered 94 tackles in just 10 games. His position as a playmaker will position him well for a pick, especially given he is just 25.

Coming in at 21st is Tre’Von Moehrig, a safety from the Raiders. A durable starter of four years who stemmed from the second round of the draft pick, Moehrig’s last season saw him record 104 tackles, even managing a pair of interceptions. Following him at 20th spot is Dre Greenlaw from the 49ers, a reputable linebacker whose Achilles tear in the Super Bowl two seasons ago, and resulting injury history, may affect his prospects.

In 19th position is Haason Reddick, a defensive end for the Jets. Despite a tumultuous year marked by a trade, an initially refused report, a restructured contract, and a single sack, Reddick’s historical performance, including two Pro Bowl selections between 2022 and 2023, still holds weight. Up next at 18th is Stefon Diggs from the Texans. A restructuring of Diggs’ deal post-trade converts him into a free agent this year. An unfortunate ACL tear in Week 8 may prove risky for his signing.

Khalil Mack from the Chargers holds the 17th spot. Despite considering retirement, this soon-to-be 34-year-old, Mack, a one-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, chose to continue, sure to attract a handsome deal. Amari Cooper from the Bills ranks at 16, with an underwhelming last season potentially attributed to injury. His past productive seasons, including a 1,250-yard achievement in 2023, suggest a still consistent player.

The 15th place belongs to Aaron Rodgers from the Jets, under close observation for an update on his desire to play. Although nearing 42, interest would peak if he decided to play, with his past-season performance testament to his skillset. Following him, 49ers Cornerback Charvarius Ward ranks at 14. A former Chiefs member, Ward’s sellers’ market value may not match his prior three-year, $40.5 million deal, but his age (still under 30) promises good years ahead.

At 13th place is Will Fries from the Colts. Fries, a commendable guard, sustained a tibia fracture in season’s Week 5, which could potentially influence teams’ offers. Following closely at 12 is Mekhi Becton from the Eagles, the Super Bowl champion whose stellar performance last season helped Saquon Barkley reach a rushing milestone of 2,000 yards.

At 11th place is Chris Godwin from the Buccaneers, who might receive hesitation due to his recent dislocated ankle injury following a prior ACL tear. However, his skill as a versatile receiver should not be overlooked. Occupying the 10th spot is Nick Bolton from the Chiefs. Young and productive, this off-ball linebacker has proven his worth in the last four NFL seasons.

Number 9 sees Malcolm Koonce from the Raiders – a promising but somewhat risky prospect following an ACL tear after a breakout eight-sack season in 2023. Davante Adams from the Jets holds the 8th spot. Despite post-trade performance hindrance, late-season prowess, including a 198-yard game, spoke volumes of his abilities.

In the 7th place is Jets’ cornerback D.J. Reed who has shown consistent development next to Sauce Gardner. At number 6 is Byron Murphy Jr., a first-time Pro Bowler last season holding six interceptions with the Vikings. Jevon Holland from the Dolphins ranks at 5th. His combination of youthfulness, skill, and the likelihood of becoming a free agent should make him an attractive choice.

Josh Sweat from the Eagles securing the 4th spot. A stand-out during the Super Bowl, Sweat, a Pro Bowler in 2021 has had an 11-sack season in 2022 and is in the prime age of his career. Ranking third comes Ronnie Stanley from the Ravens. Despite a roller-coaster injury history, Stanley is a highly capable left tackle.

Second place reveals Milton Williams of the Eagles, who impressed everyone during the Super Bowl and is certain to attract suitors. And our top spot is held by Sam Darnold from the Vikings. 2024 presented arguably his best season, despite an unspectacular finish. His draft pedigree and successful phase in a positive situation make him an attractive pursuit, although it does not come without risk.
