Musk Threatens National Security, Breaks Into IRS Data

Globally lauded entrepreneur, Elon Musk, now acknowledged as the wealthiest individual on the planet, has been poised to breach the fortress-like system of the Internal Revenue Service under the umbrella of his Department of Government Efficiency. In the wake of persistent demands from the White House, the IRS is reluctantly poised to authorize a DOGE representative’s entry into their intricate systems. These networks are repositories of exhaustive financial data pertaining to every taxpayer, business enterprise, and nonprofit organization nationwide, encompassing Social Security figures, domicile details, and banking specifics.

In an eerily dystopian twist of Orwellian rhetoric, the White House purports that the invasive stride of the DOGE into the IRS is intended to illuminate examples of ‘waste, fraud, and abuse’. All of this comes at a time when the IRS, already stretched thin in the peak of tax season, is girding up to hand over pink slips to a mammoth number of employees. Orders to cut down on expenditures across all federal agencies are driving this shift. One of Musk’s fresh recruits at DOGE, a youngster named Kliger, has been subjected to criticism for his digital infiltration.

Yet, an erstwhile functionary of the Trump regime reassured people that the maneuvers of the DOGE will remain within the confines of legality, supported by ‘appropriate security clearances’. Unfortunately, the weight of security clearances holds little significance in quest for access to taxpayer systems. As per official policies of the IRS, admittance to such confidential tax data should be solely decided by its necessity for tax administrators in executing their duties rather than any jingoistic justifications.

When he was still commanding the reins of power, erstwhile president Joe Biden, alongside his administration, was in the process of pioneering a multibillion-dollar venture. This was squarely aimed at overhauling the outdated systems deployed by the IRS for processing tax data. Regrettably, this initiative has been mired in complications due to budgetary slashes.

The current initiative by Musk bears an uncanny resemblance to a previous attempt by him to gain access to federal data – this time, through the conduit of the Department of the Treasury. This endeavor might also meet robust legal resistance in the times to come, akin to the previous plight. A collective of 19 state attorneys general vehemently opposed the Trump administration’s decision to let political nominees and ‘special government employees’ gain entry to the Treasury’s payment systems.

Prior to these developments, a judicial mandate temporarily obstructing DOGE from infiltrating the Treasury systems had been expanded this week by an order from a sitting judge. Representatives and former IRS officials nationwide roundly decried Musk and DOGE’s dealings at the tax agency.

Representative Jimmy Gomez, an ardent Democrat from California who holds a seat at the House Ways and Means Committee in charge of supervising the IRS, fiercely compared the entire ordeal to a highly alarming emergency situation. According to him, Musk’s attempts at patient data gathering since the inception is nothing short of unauthorized power seizure that teeters on the border of the illegal.

Representative Betty McCollum, a fellow Democrat from Minnesota, echoed similar sentiments, ‘An unelected business mogul should not gain an unwarranted licence to pry into your IRS records – or those of his business rivals.’

In fact, Representative Shontel Brown, a Democrat from Ohio, wondered aloud whether any Republican would rise to join their cause. The privileged nature of the information cornered by the IRS did not go unnoticed during these heated exchanges.

Former National Taxpayer Advocate, Nina Olson, gave voice to these concerns after spending over 18 years serving as the taxpayer’s representative at both the IRS and within Congressional circles. She cautioned, ‘Anyone with access to such data can exploit it, thereby broadcasting sensitive details or channeling it through unofficial routes. This can lead to gross violations of your rights.’
