Detectives from the Miami Police Department are on the hunt for two females linked to a hit-and-run incident that involved a moped. The incident, according to information from Miami Fire Rescue, occurred when a 23-year-old female moped operator was struck by an automobile around 11:30 p.m. on Monday. The accident site was the crossroads of Northeast 79th Street and Fifth Avenue, and the collision was so forceful that it launched the young woman into the air.
The unfortunate scene of the accident was near the Midpoint shopping plaza, where the moped was found twisted and abandoned on the road. The police report stated that immediately after the crash, the car’s occupant and operator abandoned their vehicle and dodged the scene by escaping on foot.
A nearby bus stop was the viewing point for Allan Karafa, a bystander who stood by helplessly. According to his account, the pair involved in the accident returned to the crash site multiple times before authorities showed up, allegedly to retrieve evidence. He detailed that the young woman on the moped had the right of way at the intersection, but the car ran a red light and knocked her over.
Karafa recounted the shocking incident saying that the moped was left abandoned, the car parked not too far off, both silent witnesses of the horrifying crime. ‘They ran across the park twice, then returned to the car, presumably to remove any incriminating evidence,’ said Karafa. He added that the suspects managed to collect their identification and other items before fleeing the scene.
Miami Fire Rescue responded rapidly to the emergency call and transported the injured moped driver to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her condition was initially critical. However, officials have since updated her status to ‘serious but stable.’ The terrifying ordeal seems to have left an indelible impression on Karafa, who watched it unfold.
Karafa, still shaken, revealed his helplessness on witnessing the crime scene. ‘Witnessing something like this firsthand, it’s unimaginable,’ he stated. ‘She was left in the middle of the road, at the mercy of God.’
In the early morning hours of Tuesday, following a lengthy cleanup and investigation, officials managed to reopen the road to regular traffic. The automobile, speculated to be the offending vehicle in the hit-and-run, was towed away from the scene.
According to Officer Mike Vega from the Miami Police Department, the preliminary findings suggested that the car ignored the traffic signal at the intersection, thus directly causing the accident. He added, ‘We have the vehicle in custody, what we need now is the public’s help to identify the two females who were in it and fled post-incident.’
Officer Vega reiterated the urgent need for public assistance in locating and identifying the two female suspects. The car they were driving, key essential evidence in the hit-and-run, is safe with the police. Now, the focus has shifted towards catching the people involved.
The hunt for the two females connected to the hit-and-run continues unabated, with their identities and whereabouts still unknown. Miami Police Department urged anyone with information pertaining to the accident or the suspected females to come forward. It’s hoped that the perpetrators will face justice for the crime they committed.
