On Thursday, Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia announced her plans to file articles of impeachment against President Biden. Greene accuses Biden of violating his oath of office by neglecting to secure America’s borders and protect national security. This, she says, will be the “first set” of articles she introduces against the president. According to Greene, Biden has purposefully failed to fulfil his presidential duties since Jan. 20 in an attempt to systematically destroy the country.
“It is with the highest amount of solemnity that I announce my intention to introduce articles of impeachment today on the head of this America-last executive branch, that has been working since Jan. 20, 2021, to systematically destroy this country, the President of the United States, Joseph Robinette Biden”, said Greene during a press conference.
Greene made a similar announcement two days ago regarding plans to introduce articles of impeachment against FBI Director Christopher Wray and Matthew Graves, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. Furthermore, Greene has also introduced articles of impeachment against Attorney General Merrick Garland and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
The Georgia Republican, who is an ally of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), claimed that Biden has not enforced immigration laws and has not secured the border, thereby compromising national security deliberately. She added that the President has allowed migrants to invade the country while depriving border control agents of the resources they need to perform their jobs
In addition, Greene said that Biden has enabled fentanyl to flood into the country, resulting in the death of Americans every day. She also criticised the administration over its policy regarding Customs and Border Protection, which involves releasing migrants into the U.S. without a set court date or an effective way to keep track of them. According to the new policy, migrants must use an app to check in until they are informed of a court date.
Greene believes this amounts to “catch-and-release” policies, which means that migrants are left free instead of being held in custody until their court date. According to her, “His policies, directives and statements surrounding the southern border have violated our laws and destroyed our country. Biden has blatantly violated his constitutional duty, and he is a direct threat to our national security.”
Article II of the Constitution states that the President and other U.S. officials can be impeached and convicted on “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanours.” Greene wants to take the time to gather co-sponsors for her impeachment resolutions. She avoided answering what exact charges she would file against the President. She discussed her plans to file the impeachment articles with members of Republican leadership, and they did not ask her to refrain from moving forward.
While she said she is introducing the articles because a majority of Republican voters and many Americans outside the party agree with the idea, Greene did not shy away from doing what she believes is the right thing. “There’s never any consequences for anyone in the federal government when regular American citizens face consequences all the time, and I’m introducing these articles because this is what people are demanding,” said Greene.
Mayorkas has received intense criticism from many Republicans over the situation at the southern border, which has seen a record number of people crossing it in recent months. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) called for Mayorkas to be impeached last week.
Greene accuses Wray and Garland of transforming the FBI and the Justice Department into Biden’s “personal police force” to prosecute his political opponents. Greene alleged that the people who participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection were mostly peaceful, but Garland pursued them regardless. According to a bipartisan Senate report published last year, seven people died in relation to the attack on the Capitol.
Greene stated that Wray prioritises his own political interests above performing his job duties. She identified Wray as a Democrat when he is actually a Republican. Appointed by former President Trump, Wray has served as the FBI’s Director since August, 2017. Greene also said she planned to file impeachment articles against Graves, the U.S. attorney, over his prosecutions of Jan. 6 defendants.
“That affects people in our nation’s capital, just regular innocent people that live and work here. I think as our conference learns more and more on this, they’ll understand it,” said Greene. The Representative also made an analogy by saying that employees who are corrupt or do not serve their employers can be fired from their jobs. Greene said all five officials are corrupt and unfit to hold office; hence, they must be impeached.
As of now, there has been no comment from the White House regarding this matter. While rewriting this article, the aim was to cater to conservative readers by adopting a subtle spin in the writing style that appeals to them.
