A resident of Brooklyn, 52-year-old Jamar Banks, finds himself facing an array of charges following an altercation that saw a subway commuter in Manhattan brutally stabbed on the first day of the new year. In a news briefing held on Thursday, Alvin Bragg, the District Attorney of Manhattan, shed light on the formal indictment issued against Banks for his alleged involvement in the heinous act inflicted upon a fellow subway passenger at the 14th Street station in Manhattan during the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Residing in the region of East New York, more specifically Blake Avenue, Banks presented himself at the New York State Supreme Court this past Tuesday, where he was officially arraigned. The serious charges against him include a count of first-degree assault, an attempted charge of the same degree, as well as two charges of second-degree assault.
From the details disclosed in the official court documents released, the incident commenced at around 9:30 in the morning, when Banks had fallen asleep within his seat on the uptown 2 train. While he slumbered, another passenger allegedly seized Banks’ suitcase, bringing it into the adjacent subway carriage, wherein he extracted Banks’ blanket and proceeded to sleep on the subway seats.

As the man retreated, Banks didn’t back down. Amid this volatile situation, Banks is alleged to have stabbed the man once in the rear, as stated by the prosecuting team. The unfortunate victim, although wounded, managed to stumble his way to the next subway car, pushing the emergency button before he collapsed onto the ground, with blood pouring from his stab wound.
These horrifying scenes were witnessed by the rest of the subway passengers who immediately dialed 911 as they watched the victim bleed heavily from his back. The first responders rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he recieved emergency medical care. His medical report highlighted a ruptured lung and severe internal bleeding, demonstrating the severity of the attack.
Banks, on the other hand, seized this moment of chaos to escape from the crime scene, leaving the subway and the victim behind. However, this wasn’t the end of the episode. On the 5th of January, Banks was tracked down and captured by warrant detectives stationed at the 219th Street train station situated in the Bronx.
