Amid the approaching storm, a distressed canine was found alone, abandoned, near a thoroughfare. This came to light as the former guardian of the animal was fleeing Florida due to the apparent threat of imminent Hurricane Milton. According to the authorities, the bull terrier was left all alone by a passerby as he made haste to vacate the state. The individual, identified as Giovanny Aldama Garcia, now faces stern legal action for his alleged act of animal cruelty, as informed by State Attorney Suzy Lopez. Garcia, reportedly en-route to Georgia to avoid the storm, asserted that he had no other option as he was couldn’t find anyone to care for his dog, named Jumbo, hence he left him behind.
The incident is particularly severe given that it coincided with a state of emergency declaration due to the approaching hurricane. ‘Those who commit wrongdoings during such critical times should prepare for severe penalties. That was, in fact, the condition last week, and it remains the same now,’ shared Lopez. She further pronounced that ‘justice will be served’, assuring that neglectful acts like these will not go unpunished.
The abandoned dog, now lovingly called Trooper to commemorate the valiant trooper who saved him from his distressing situation, was discovered off Interstate 75, near Bruce B. Downs Boulevard by Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Orlando Morales. As the storm was fast-approaching, playing with the dangerous wind speed of 120 mph and eventually making a Category 3 landfall that night, Morales found the poor creature during a water-soaked morning of October 9th.
After his rescue, Trooper has been shifted to foster care, residing at the state capital Tallahassee, till he finds a loving home. The Leon County Humane Society is overseeing his care and welfare till he gets adopted. The news of the gentle canine stirred widespread sympathy, and the agency has been flooded with hundreds of inquiries regarding Trooper’s adoption.
Upon discovery, Trooper was found standing in a large pool of water, continuously growling as Morales approached him. The disappointing state of the dog, left to brave out the storm alone, certainly triggered empathy. ‘It’s OK, buddy. It’s OK,’ Morales assured, captured via his body camera recording. The trooper empathetically stated that he didn’t blame the dog for its tense behavior.
Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis, initially issued a statement, affirming the owner to face consequences. ‘I’m warning you, refrain from such acts. Those who loot, those who exploit vulnerable individuals, those who break laws will face the consequences,’ DeSantis remarked on October 10th. He further strongly condemned such cruel actions as ‘chaining a dog to a pole during a brewing storm’, and vowed to enforce rigorous laws against those guilty.
DeSantis had remarked earlier, during the cyclone, that he was appalled by the irresponsibility of a person who thought it was a bright idea to abandon his dog, tying him up to a pole on the interstate highway, as the storm gathered momentum. DeSantis emphasized, ‘Under no circumstance should one abandon an animal exposed to such a perilous condition. One must never just chain a dog and abandon it to face the onslaught of a storm by itself.’
The caretakers at the humane society are attentively caring for Trooper, who arrived at the shelter in a visibly distressed state. The traumatic experience of abandonment and facing the storm alone has left Trooper incredibly stressed and still in the process of decompression. The animal shelter depicts, ‘Traditionally, rescued dogs, particularly those abandoned, do not readily embrace happiness. It takes them some time to feel safe again.’
The society elaborates that dogs usually require several days to start feeling safe post-rescue. It may take a few more weeks for them to come out of their shell and many months before they feel comfortable enough to adopt a routine and start feeling at ease. They thus underline the severity of the traumatic experience Trooper has faced and the resulting stress.
The shelter further added, ‘It remains a mystery as to what life was like for him before the tragic abandonment. We’re focusing on understanding his needs before he’s ready for adoption. Therefore, he’s kept in foster care until we’re confident he’s prepared for the next phase of life, assuring his upcoming experiences are pleasant.’
Recovering from such a traumatic experience may take often-prolonged periods, hence the Leon County Humane Society stressed this point. As compassionate caregivers, they seek not to rush Trooper’s recovery but instead to allow it to occur naturally, while ensuring he gets the love, care, and attention he needs.
