Hundreds of Twitter users have expressed their disinterest in celebrating Independence Day this year, with many even calling for protests against the holiday.
Following the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, people have argued that the United States should not be celebrated if women aren’t free.
Others blame Donald Trump and the January 6 riot for ruining their holiday, Fox News reported.
MSNBC journalist Dean Obeidallah tweeted “How can our nation celebrate ‘Independence Day’ when the GOP Supreme ‘Court’ just stripped women of the right to personal freedom?!”
The group Rise up 4 Abortion Rights shared a flyer reading “Monday, July 4 National Day of Protest INTO THE STREETS to demand the Federal Government must restore Nationwide Legal Abortion NOW!”
Comedian Christian Finnegan said the holiday feels like “a birthday party for someone in hospice”.
“I’m recommending women don’t celebrate since we have the opposite of freedom,” replied one Twitter user.
Author Don Winslow tweeted “After what the Trump court did Friday what ‘independence’ are we celebrating on July 4?”
“I don’t see how this country can celebrate ‘independence’ when you just fucked over every woman in America,” he continued.
Former Ohio state senator and MSNBC contributor Nina Turner said “Conservatives are going to trample on human rights, then turn around and celebrate Independence Day weekend”.
Other Twitter users blamed conservatives and implied they should not be celebrating over the weekend.
Kari Lake, a Republican candidate in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election, tweeted that the Arizona Democrat party is hosting a “F**k the Fourth” protest.
“Arizona Republicans, Independents & #WalkAway Dems are celebrating America at a gun range,” she said. “The difference could not be more clear”.
While many are wishing to skip this year’s Independence Day, there are still plenty looking forward to celebrating with friends and family.
Author Dinesh D’Souza tweeted “This July 4 we don’t celebrate “America.” We celebrate OUR America—the America that stays true to its founding principles. This is the America the Left despises. This is why they revile the founders, the national anthem & the flag. And this is why we despise them!”
Comedian and Washington Times columnist Tim Young said “Good morning to everyone who understands why the 4th of July is so important and loves this country”.
Former Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley tweeted “On this July 4th weekend, may we never forget that in America, anything is possible!”
