Kamala Says She’s The Candidate Who Is Tough On The Border

Kamala Harris
In a recent CNN interview, Vice President Kamala Harris positioned herself as a stronger advocate for border security compared to former President Donald Trump, despite the Biden-Harris administration witnessing a significant increase in undocumented immigration.

During her first interview as the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris was challenged by host Dana Bash about the timing of new asylum restrictions, implemented over three years into their term. Harris defended her approach by highlighting her efforts in addressing the root causes of migration, a role assigned to her by President Biden. She claimed these efforts have led to substantial U.S. investments in Central America, purportedly reducing migration from these regions.

However, the data suggests otherwise; illegal immigration has not significantly decreased. Factors like extreme summer heat and new immigration policies might temporarily mask the true numbers, as noted by Chad Wolf, former Acting Secretary of Homeland Security.

Harris also blamed Trump for obstructing border security legislation in the Senate, although this bill faced broad Republican opposition, primarily due to concerns it would normalize illegal immigration. The Republican co-sponsor eventually withdrew support, highlighting the bill’s controversial nature.

Harris’s immigration policy extends beyond border control. She advocates for a government-funded healthcare system that would include undocumented immigrants, arguing that crossing the border illegally should not label one as a criminal. Instead, she focuses on combating transnational criminal organizations involved in human trafficking, drugs, and arms smuggling, emphasizing her experience as a prosecutor in California.

Her approach combines empathy with law enforcement, aiming to tackle the reasons people migrate rather than just controlling borders. Harris believes this strategy reduces the need for dangerous border crossings.

This stance reflects a nuanced understanding of immigration complexities, positioning her as uniquely equipped to address these issues due to her vice-presidential role and previous legal experience. Her policies suggest a balance between humane treatment of migrants and robust enforcement against larger criminal entities.

In essence, Harris promises a presidency that would continue this dual approach, aiming to manage immigration humanely while maintaining security. The effectiveness of her strategies in reversing the tide of undocumented immigration and enhancing border safety remains to be seen.
