Kamala Harris: Unfounded Paranoia Over Trump’s Election Win Claim?

Vice President Kamala Harris, in a clear display of her team’s paranoia, recently suggested readiness for an anticipated premature claim of election victory by former President Trump. Her statement was given in response to an interview question by ABC’s Mary Bruce who asked what her course of action would be if Trump claimed an early win ahead of all results, as it was recounted he did in 2020. Harris, whose track record has often included over-prepareness for circumstances less likely to unfold, unflinchingly responded that her team was adjusting to such a hypothetical reality. Their preparation, she alleged, was to combat what they perceive as a manipulation attempt on Trump’s part of the press and American public’s consensus.

The context of this paranoia alludes to Trump’s statement in the 2020 elections, where he spoke mere hours after the Election Day, notwithstanding the fact that not all votes had been tallied yet. The fear seems misplaced in retrospect as Biden was announced as the victor the Saturday following the Election Day, despite Trump’s statement. It’s curious how Harris continues to play out this rhetoric of being ready for an ‘unforeseen’ Trump challenge, especially when in hindsight, their victory came untroubled.

Harris’ obsession with the prospect of a Trump challenge has led her in the past to suggest the existence of special teams tasked to deal with such an event. The irony, however, is that Trump has in fact expressly stated that he would only accept the election outcome if he finds them to be ‘free and fair.’ Perhaps Harris might have been better served focusing on actual campaign issues rather than conjuring hypothetical scenarios of a Trump challenge.

The interview with Harris, which took place six days before the Election Day, happened amidst her whirlwind tour through three battleground states – North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Interestingly, despite polls indicating a tightening race and a perceptible shift towards Trump, when queried about her need for Republican votes for a victory, Harris again took a rather idealistic stand.

In what can only be seen as a thinly veiled attempt to don the mantle of a unifier, Harris declared her ambition to bring the country together. Placing blame on the so-called ‘Trump era,’ she labeled it a period characterized by division and blame-game. Yet, her assessment fails to take into account the deep-seated issues America has struggled with, issues that predate the Trump era. However, Harris conveniently sidestepped this reality and instead painted a picture of an exhausted America which she aspires to revitalize.

In another exchange during the interview, an unmissable reference was made to a comment made by President Biden the previous day. With his classical tactlessness, Biden seemed to have referred to Trump’s supporters as ‘garbage.’ In an attempt to sweep this under the rug, Harris chimed in with a recycled response, asserting her disagreement with criticising individuals based on their political affiliations.

The irony of a Vice President who seeks to project an image of a unifier yet belonging to an administration which holds such a disparaging view of its political rivals is apparent. It seems that in practice, her notion of unity only extends as far as those who align with her own beliefs.

According to a forecast model, Trump currently has a 53 percent probability of securing the election win. However, Harris still seems to retain a slender lead in the nation-wide polling. The data shows Harris with a 48.3 percent backing, slightly ahead of Trump’s 47.7 percent.
