U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan delivered a verdict on Friday that largely favored the legal arguments of the 45th President, Donald J. Trump.
While the ruling addressed a request for protective measures concerning evidence, the judge’s decision offered prosecutors a minor victory by allowing them to label materials as “sensitive” more broadly than is standard
. However, Judge Chutkan upheld Trump’s free speech rights.

Nevertheless, she cautioned Trump, the 2024 GOP frontrunner, to be prudent about his public statements and publications related to the ongoing legal matter.
Special Counsel Jack Smith had sought the protective order following Trump’s post on Truth Social that read: “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU!”

Smith highlighted Trump’s history of making public remarks on social media concerning legal actions involving him, emphasizing the need to prevent any improper use or release of discovery materials to the public.
In response, Trump’s lawyer, John Lauro, deemed Smith’s request as “extraordinary,” as quoted by Fox News. Lauro pointed out the unusual situation where a presidential candidate is facing charges brought forth by the Department of Justice, led by a political opponent.
Chutkan responded by emphasizing the importance of the orderly administration of justice over political considerations.
She noted that while Trump may wish to address his political adversaries, the ongoing criminal case would necessitate certain limitations on his public speech. Chutkan clarified her stance, asserting she wouldn’t let the potential impact on any political campaign influence her decisions.
Responding, Trump’s attorney stressed the current politically charged environment, pointing out that all actions are being closely scrutinized due to the government’s actions.
He further highlighted the need for fair treatment and expressed concerns over the undisclosed volume of discovery.
Judge Chutkan reiterated her commitment to ensuring Trump’s rights are upheld, emphasizing that the ongoing political campaign would not sway her decisions.
