An Illinois mother has filed a civil rights complaint with the Department of Justice after her 13-year-old daughter was nearly forced to change in front of a transgender student in the girls’ locker room. Nicole Georgas, the mother at the center of the case, says school administrators failed to protect her daughter’s right to privacy and instead prioritized radical gender policies over the well-being of female students.
The incident occurred on February 5 when Georgas’s daughter was using the girls’ bathroom and discovered a biological male present. When she raised concerns, school administrators informed her that students are allowed to use the restroom and locker room of their chosen gender identity.
Outraged by the school’s handling of the situation, Georgas confronted the administration, citing privacy concerns and referencing President Donald Trump’s executive order on protecting women’s spaces in sports and schools. Despite her efforts, school officials doubled down, insisting that the transgender student had the right to access the girls’ facilities, in line with guidance from legal counsel.
Fearing for her daughter’s mental well-being and basic privacy rights, Georgas escalated the issue by filing a formal civil rights complaint. The complaint has since been referred to the Department of Education, where it is now under review.
The controversy intensified when Georgas’s daughter and several classmates refused to change in the locker room due to the presence of the transgender student. Instead of addressing their concerns, school officials reportedly pressured the girls to comply. Despite repeated attempts by administrators to force them to change, Georgas’s daughter refused to back down.
In response, Deerfield Public Schools District 109 released a statement claiming that no student is required to change in front of others and that alternative changing options are available. However, Georgas argues that the reality in the school does not match this claim and that her daughter’s rights were dismissed in favor of political ideology.
This case underscores the growing national debate over transgender policies in schools, as more parents push back against policies that allow biological males access to female-only spaces. With President Trump’s administration focused on restoring common-sense protections for girls and women, this case may serve as a key battle in the fight to uphold privacy and fairness in America’s schools.
