High Point’s Wild & Free Program Triumphs in Beverly Hills Film Festival

Journeying from the humble beginnings of High Point to the glittering heart of Hollywood. The unmistakably comedic animated short, ‘Hot Wing Redemption’, was the passion project of the individuals participating in The Arc of High Point’s Wild & Free program. Their objective was twofold: to express creativity and to challenge societal perceptions. Though they are labelled as individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, they sought to illustrate that their identity goes beyond the trappings of this classification. Their existence and talents are not confined by societal labels, a reality they’ve known all along.

Their creative brainchild, ‘Hot Wing Redemption,’ had its moment in the cinematic spotlight at the esteemed TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. This theatre, a landmark on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, served as the stage during the yearly Beverly Hills Film Festival. The opportunity to screen their film at this festival wasn’t an isolated recognition. After earlier being bestowed honors at two other significant events, the Telly Awards and All Comedy Short Film Festival, the Beverly Hills Film Festival represents the current chapter in the ongoing ‘Hot Wing Redemption’ success story.

As the Beverly Hills Film Festival also hosts an awards gala set for Sunday, anticipation is building. The tale of ‘Hot Wing Redemption’ commenced in the year 2021, sparked by a profound conversation within the Wild & Free group. They pondered the depiction of disability within the realms of film and television — questioning the authenticity of these portrayals.

They discussed examples of characters with autism, asking, ‘Is this representation truthfully capturing the experience?’ The discussion dove into questions of casting. How often are individuals with disabilities represented by actors who themselves live with disabilities, versus neurotypical actors emulating disability? Their consensus was a lack of sufficient representation and a tendency towards stereotype-based portrayals.

This compelling dialogue ignited the seeds for creating their own narrative. The creative journey that unfolded was nothing short of magical. The narrative they designed centers around an unconventional group of superheroes, led by Lawyer Man. Following the victory over their top enemy, Jacob, they head to their cherished haunt to savor their success.

Yet, amidst their hilarious celebration, Jacob returns seeking redemption. The plot then thickens, unveiling that Lawyer Man’s sister, who also happens to be Jacob’s romantic partner, has been captured. Her captor is a fiery dragon, necessitating an unlikely team-up between the superheroes and Jacob. Their mission becomes rescuing the damsel, a deed requiring the taming of a dragon.

The triumph of their heroic act is marked by a celebratory gathering, this time including their former enemy. Generating the funds for this animated endeavor was made possible through the crowdfunding platform Seed&Spark, dedicated to indie filmmakers. An impressive sum of roughly $17,000 was raised, setting the creative wheels in motion.

The best feature of the project, possibly, was having the Wild & Free participants lend their voices to the film’s characters. This opportunity allowed them to play pivotal roles with great enthusiasm. The driving force behind this film was to go beyond merely creating a touching spectacle. Rather than just functioning as an ‘inspirational project’ undertaken by ‘special people’, they yearned for authenticity.

They crafted a narrative eliminating disability from the equation, focusing solely on constructing a light-hearted, humorous story. The emphasis lay on a group of individuals wielding their imaginations to bring a captivating piece of art to life. The underlying motive was to produce something of intrinsic value, and that’s exactly what they achieved.

The question on everyone’s minds at High Point now seems to be, ‘When will we glimpse ‘Hot Wing Redemption’?’ The answer seems to be in the not-too-distant future. The Arc is already considering possibilities for a grand public premiere, where the film can really shine in a communal setting.

Through this event, they aim to give their actors their rightful moment under the spotlight. They envision a glamorous red carpet welcome, punctuated with photo-ops, and potentially a post-screening panel discussion. A milestone night that celebrates creative expression while opening up fresh dialogues on representation.
