Jennifer Kasunick, a 20-year-old blind student at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, tragically lost her life after being struck by a train near 10th Street on Saturday evening.
According to the Holland Department of Public Safety, Kasunick was walking on the sidewalk when the train signals activated. She stopped but was apparently unaware of her proximity to the tracks and was clipped by the passing train. Emergency responders found her unconscious at the scene, and she was later pronounced dead at Holland Hospital.
Kasunick, originally from Bay Village, Ohio, was a junior at Hope College. She was an active member of the campus community, serving as a resident assistant in Phelps Hall and participating in the college orchestra as a talented violinist. Her service dog, Rowdy, was with her during the incident but survived.
The Hope College community is mourning her loss, with students and faculty expressing their grief and sharing memories of Kasunick’s positive impact on campus. A memorial gathering was held at Dimnent Memorial Chapel, where attendees honored her life and contributions.
CSX, the company operating the train, extended its condolences and stated it would support local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
