House Panel Subpoenas Tim Walz In COVID Fraud Probe

Governor Tim Walz

Amidst intense scrutiny, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, currently also the vice-presidential nominee for the Democratic Party, has been called upon to provide information as part of an ongoing congressional investigation spearheaded by Republicans. The investigation focuses on allegations concerning the misappropriation of funds meant to aid in COVID-19 relief. The House Education and the Workforce Committee has expressed interest in securing documents tied to the operation of federal child nutrition programs by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE).

At the core of the investigation is a Minnesota non-profit entity called Feeding Our Future (FOF). This organization is beleaguered by serious charges drawn by the Department of Justice (DOJ), claiming a fraudulent misuse of resources amounting to $250 million. The funds, originally purposed to aid children in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, have reportedly fallen victim to this scandalous scheme.

You, amongst others, seemingly have direct or indirect involvement with or insights into how the MDE handled the FCNP, or had responsibilities or knowledge related to the said fraud’, the House committee has pointed out, referencing the comments made by Governor Walz and his team in the media. The implication here is that the office of the Governor had prior knowledge or was involved in how MDE managed the FCNP, and any potential mishandlings pertaining to the widespread fraud.

In an attempt to gather comprehensive evidence and documents, subpoenas have been issued not only to Governor Walz but also to others potentially involved in the case. Among these intimations are Commissioner Willie Jett of the MDE, Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack, and Phyllis Fong, Inspector General for the Department of Agriculture. The timeline set for these responses is the 18th of September.

Interestingly, the selection of Walz as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate for the 2024 presidential race came into the public light in early August. However, the congressional inquiry helmed by House Republicans into FOF and their persistent efforts to acquire crucial documents from Minnesota state officials were already underway well before these recent developments.

Back in 2022, federal prosecutors put forth numerous charges against various individuals linked with FOF, proclaiming it to be ‘the nation’s most significant instance of COVID-19-related fraud’ at the moment. The allegations and subsequent charges testify to the scale and severity of the purported fraudulent activity.

Further developments in the case came to light in June of this same year. U.S. Attorney Andrew Lugar made an announcement stating that five defendants linked to FOF had successfully been prosecuted and convicted by the provision of federal law. In addition, the federal authorities have asserted that 23 individual parties have been ‘held accountable’ for having roles in this fraudulent scheme that syphoned away $250 million.

Upon questioning Governor Walz about the lack of accountability regarding the concerned agencies and whether any MDE employees would face disciplinary measures due to these events, his response was, ‘This was not a case of malfeasance.’ He also made it clear that, ‘Not a single state employee was implicated in doing anything illegal. Their shortfall was merely not exercising due diligence to an expected standard.’

Meanwhile, the Office of the Legislative Auditor in Minnesota has shared a report earlier this summer expressing dissatisfaction with the MDE’s supervision of FOF. The report implies that such lax oversight was ‘inadequate’ and inadvertently ‘opened avenues for fraudulent actions.’

In response to the criticisms laid out in the report, a spokesperson for Governor Walz has sought to reassure the public and the investigators. The statement reiterates that Walz’s administration has already ‘implemented many of the rectifying steps recommended by the Office of the Legislative Auditor [OLA].’ The statement further promises ‘strong measures’ to identify and correct any additional susceptibilities in governmental programs.
