California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that he has joined Donald Trump’s social media platform to call out “Republican lies”.
“I know we’re all on this platform in search for the truth,” Newsom said about Truth Social in a video.
“But the truth is I’ve not been able to find a simple explanation for the fact that we have a red state murder problem,” he continued.
Newsom pointed out that 8 of the top 10 states with the highest murder rates are run by Republicans.
“So the question is simple. What are the laws and policies in those states that are leading to such carnage?” he asked.
Newsom’s comments come as multiple cities in California face criticism for rising rates of crime.
San Francisco voters recently decided to recall liberal District Attorney Chesa Boudin. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon is also facing a recall over his policies.
Gascon was criticized this week after a suspect who was on probation killed two El Monte police officers. The suspect had pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and was given a lenient sentence through a plea deal.
According to the CDC, the top five states with the highest homicide mortality rate are Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri, and Arkansas.
Truth Social was launched in February and “encourages an open, free, and honest global conversation without discriminating on the basis of political ideology”.
Following the launch, there was a long waiting list to create an account.
